Last week, orientation meetings, club introduction events, fire pit gatherings, class meetings, and dorm pod activities gave students an opportunity to bond and build community. On Monday, this flurry of activity gave way to a new routine as classes began. Online learning will continue throughout the quarantine period, after which the majority of classes will be held in-person for those on campus.
On Sunday evening, students and faculty attended Convocation via Zoom, which marked the official start of the 129th year of teaching at Hotchkiss. Dr. Jason Larson, director of spiritual life and instructor in philosophy and religion, welcomed back the School community. Head of School Craig Bradley addressed the unprecedented circumstances of opening Hotchkiss while experiencing a pandemic, as well as the nation's reckoning with racism. "As we learn, we can help the communities of which we are a part - Hotchkiss, our families, our social networks, workplaces - become stronger, healthier, fairer, and more inclusive," he said.
Class presidents Cyrus Farman-Farmaian '21 and Keren Mikanda '21 encouraged students that no matter how unusual the start of this new school year is, Bearcats will make the best of it.
"None of us ever knows what a new year will hold for us, and that has never been more true than this year," said Farman-Farmaian.
Mikanda commented: "Despite this uncertainty, we have faith that this year will be a good one no matter where we are or where we end up. If there's anything that we've learned, it is that the Hotchkiss community can make the best out of any situation especially when we're together, physically or not."
