Summertime & Prevention
This year, the June solstice occurs on Tuesday, June 21, marking the start of summer! Summertime means more sunshine, time outdoors, and often more drinking. According to research published in the Journals of Studies on Alcohol, ” Annual seasonality in alcohol use excluding drinking behavior in December, is highest in the summer.” We also see a spike in teen
alcohol use during this season. With this in mind, it's vital to be proactive. Continue raising awareness and amplifying prevention efforts within your communities. Consider sharing the SUMMER acronym, created by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, designed to help parents start the conversation about the risks associated with alcohol use with teens.

SUMMER

Set rules.
Understand and communicate.
Monitor activities.
Make sure to stay involved.
Encourage involvement in summer activities.
Reserve time for family.
"Live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink in the wild air."

The partnership between coalitions and law enforcement can produce positive results in preventing underage alcohol use. Law enforcement implements many environmental strategies. The APRC has created a Law Enforcement Strategies Guide that provides an overview of evidence-based law enforcement strategies coalitions can implement based on their local data. An Alcohol Law Enforcement Fact Sheet that provides tips and suggestions for engaging law enforcement is available to download, along with a fact sheet for how teens can partner with law enforcement in English and Spanish.

The APRC hosts the Supporting Law Enforcement Efforts to Enforce Alcohol Laws: Practical Guidance for Coalitions webinar with Nancy M. McGee, JD, on Tuesday, June 21st, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Nancy will provide practical tips on specific ways coalitions can provide technical assistance and support to law enforcement agencies engaging in the enforcement of alcohol laws throughout the community.
The Untapped Potential of Alcohol Policy for Cancer Prevention

Tuesday, June 28, 2022 - 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Alcohol consumption is a causal factor in cancer of the oral cavity and throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and female breast. Despite the massive attention focused on reducing cancer risk, this fact is only known by about 30% of the population. This webinar will review the alcohol-related cancer burden in the US; identify higher-risk populations; discuss evidence-based and emerging interventions, highlighting state and local policy options; and explore barriers to implementation and how to overcome them.

Raimee H. Eck, PhD, MPH, MPAS has over 20 years of clinical and public health training and experience, focusing on the epidemiology of alcohol use and harm, environmental interventions to reduce acute and chronic causes of alcohol-related harm, and translating research into effective policy.
The Alcohol Policy Resource Center can assist with analyzing your data, scanning your community, and matching policy/strategy to assessment findings. If you have any questions or need more information, please reach out to Kellie Henrichs or Jody Heavilin
