Matthew 18:21-35

Peter came and said to Jesus, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?”

Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.
“For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Creation Season - September Worship
Renewing, Repairing, Restoring

As we begin the transition from summer to fall, this is a natural time to express gratitude for the wonders of creation and consider our role as custodians of that goodness. Grace Church glorifies God in powerful ways through its work with Gideon’s Garden. What a great gift to the youth workers and other volunteers, as well as the food pantries that help alleviate hunger in our region! Relationships are built and lives restored through this ministry. Creation Season reminds us that all the diverse elements of creation are neighbors living in relationship, depending on each other, sharing “this fragile earth, our island home.” In Matthew 18, Peter asks Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who has wronged him. What if we re-framed that question with the Earth asking Jesus how many times humanity should be forgiven for polluting, endangering species, deforesting, strip mining, or just failing to pay attention? We will celebrate Gideon’s Garden and bless the animals at Taft Farm on September 27, but in the midst of our joyful celebrations, may we also hold the pain of the Earth and its creatures in our hearts.

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
I WANT TO HELP
Gideon's Garden Update
It may be September, but we haven't slowed down yet! This week we continued our melon harvesting. We picked from our "miscellaneous melons" row, and our melons shapes and sizes sure are miscellaneous! Featured in the picture above is a giant watermelon variety (over 20 lbs!) and gherkins, which are small 'cucumber-melons'.
We have also started more planting in our open filed. This week we harvested cilantro and planted new cilantro and basil sprouts into the ground! Hopefully they can grow big enough for a harvest before the frost comes!

We finally caught the pesky woodchuck that's been eating our pumpkins! We were quite happy to release the critter far away from the garden. And finally in wasn't a skunk!!

Sermon on the Mount:
A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven
Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m.,on Zoom beginning September 29
Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, has built her career on helping Christians understand the Jewish context of Jesus’ life and ministry. Her newest book,
Sermon on the Mount, is a readable and thought-provoking look at these fundamental teachings from Matthew’s gospel. We will use this book (available in paperback, for Kindle, or in an audio version on Audible) as the guide to our six-week study, in partnership with the folks of St. Paul’s in Stockbridge.
The Rev. Sam Smith will teach this Bible Study.
