White House to convene hunger, nutrition conference
For the first time in over 50 years, the White House will host a conference on hunger, nutrition, and health this September. The conference and the preparatory work leading up to it will accelerate progress and drive significant change to end hunger, improve nutrition and physical activity, reduce diet-related disease, and close the disparities around them.
The first White House conference on hunger held in 1969 was a game-changer in identifying effective solutions for addressing hunger, shares Luis Guardia, president, Food Research & Action Center (FRAC). It led to the creation of proven federal nutrition programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, school meals and the Special Supplemental Feeding Program for Women, Infants and Children. U.S. dairy exports finished Q1 strong
U.S. dairy exports in March nearly matched the record high of 2021, as total exports on a milk solids equivalent (MSE) basis decreased by less than 1%, a drop of only 2,005 metric tons (MT) MSE, according to the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC).
The strong performance of cheese (up 13%, up 4,773 MT), particularly cheddar (up 86%, up 3,596 MT), is a positive signal to the market, highlighting global consumers’ growing consumption of U.S.-made cheese, the group added. Read more

MSU: Climate change to increase aflatoxin presence in U.S. corn
As climate change continues to alter weather patterns around the planet including the Midwest, researchers at Michigan State University are modeling the impact on crops such as corn.
"The United States is the largest exporter and donor of field corn around the world," says Felicia Wu, a John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor and an international expert on food safety in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at MSU. "Here in the U.S., we consume field corn in the form of corn chips, corn flakes, corn grits and corn tortillas; as opposed to sweet corn, which is frozen, canned and eaten off the cob. Field corn is also used for animal feed and for ethanol production."
