FEATURED YDEKC MEMBER - Mother Africa
Mother Africa has been a YDEKC Member organization since 2016, and Executive Director, Risho Sapano joined the YDEKC Advisory Board in 2018. Mother Africa has worked to provide the skills necessary for Washington state's refugee and immigrant women and children to reach their fullest potential since 2004.

The mission of Mother Africa is to support African refugee and immigrant women and their families to reach their highest potential. Mother Africa is committed to leadership building, advocacy, and community action to navigate and overcome barriers to accessing healthcare, education, safety, and economic independence while fostering an empowering environment that celebrates cultural diversity, families, and socio-economic growth. Their programs are co-designed with and lead by the communities they serve who come from 25 African countries and 10 Middle East countries. Their programs focus on addressing environmental justicecivic engagement, youth development, women’s empowerment(SAFARI), connecting the community to existing resources to meet basic needs, and supporting parents of thriving children

Their Refugee Youth Mentorship Program is designed for refugee or asylee youth age 18-24 who have been in the USA for less than five years. One-on-one mentorship helps youth to identify and achieve personal and career goals, build life skills, connect to resources, and get case management support.
Their most recent work includes their partnership with Northwest Harvest, as they co-collaborated to produce a video in Swahili to reduce stigma and increase accessibility at foodbanks for refugees and immigrants by sharing information with the community about what to expect in four different languages and English.
