LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL

Joe White, MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

Dear BABC Members,

Our incredibly busy year at the British Consulate-General in San Francisco has continued at a blistering pace. On the heels of the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference at the beginning of January, we ended last month and began this month with the SPIE Photonics West Conference. We were proud to host a series of receptions and events to celebrate British businesses participating in the event and I was delighted to see so many faces, old and new.

This month, we will be participating in the World Ag Expo in Tulare, California, the world’s largest annual agricultural exposition. We will be hosting a high-level event at the Expo to discuss sustainable agriculture and Ag tech and to explore further opportunities for international collaboration. At the Expo, we will also be supporting a delegation of academics and researchers from some of the leading universities and Ag tech research centres in the UK as well as a delegation of companies led by Invest Northern Ireland. We are excited to showcase British science, innovation, and expertise to our partners in California, the United States, and around the world. Deputy Consul General Tammy Sandhu and the team will also be spending several days before and after the Expo touring the San Joaquin Valley, visiting universities and meeting with governmental and business stakeholders in a part of California that often does not receive the attention that it deserves.

Finally, you will have noted that there have been major departmental changes in Whitehall in recent days. The Prime Minister announced the creation of four new government departments with the aim of ensuring that the right skills and teams are delivering for the British people. The new departments include the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Department for Business and Trade, the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport, and the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology. These significant changes that include the merger of some existing departments and the dissolution of others. I am excited by the opportunities these new departments will provide to support our objectives here on the West Coast and look forward to sharing more about the work ahead of us in the coming months.

Best wishes to all of you for a fruitful and productive February. As ever, I am tremendously grateful for the tireless work of the BABC in supporting transatlantic business every single day, year in and year out.

BRITISHAMERICAN BUSINESS CEO UPDATE

Duncan Edwards

CEO

BritishAmerican Business

Having spent time in London and New York in January I am struck by what feels like distinctly different sentiments about the immediate prospects for each market drawn from my conversations with BAB members and from a balanced review of the observations of economists and other commentators. In the USA there is now a general consensus that the economic slowdown will be shallow and short-lived. Yes, there is some adjustment to headcount in industries that benefitted from the Covid shutdowns, especially in the largest tech firms, but overwhelmingly what I am hearing are stories of full orderbooks, strong pipelines and an optimism about the economy.
