8th Grade Families: PCHS Curriculum and Expo Night Jan. 18
PCHS is planning an 8th grade student and parent night on January 18, 2023, 6:00pm in PCHS's Wilson Auditorium. The purpose of Curriculum Night is to allow you to learn about each core class (English language arts, math, science, and social studies) from the department's perspective. This night will also include an Electives and Extra-curricular Expo with representatives from a variety of elective offerings and clubs. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held virtually.

We encourage both the student (current 8th graders) and parent(s) to attend, so that all can receive the information about courses offered at Platte County High School. This will greatly assist you and your student in the planning process and in course selection for the 2023-24 school year. If you would like more information, please contact your student's counselor: Kim Schank or Whitney Edman, PCMS Counselors, or Amanda Griffin, Barry Counselor.

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
SCHIVIR Me Timbers Staff Recognition
Each month, PCR-3 recognizes staff members who are living our vision, mission, and values, by presenting the "SCHIVIR Me Timbers" award. SCHIVIR is an acronym for our values: Student Focus, Collaboration, High Expectations, Integrity, Visionary Leadership, Innovation, and Results Orientation.

At the December board meeting, Whitney Edman and Pam Singer, PCMS's Student Council Sponsors, were recognized for their visionary leadership and student focus in guiding their students through improvements, revitalization, and implementation of their student-led school-wide assemblies.
2021 Bond Program Update
Each month, project managers for our 2021 Bond Program projects, provide an update on construction projects taking place throughout the District. At the December meeting, Matt St. Louis with Newkirk Novak Construction Partners, presented the final construction update on the PCHS Rebuild Phase One project, and Darren Lee with McCown Gordon, reviewed construction progress on Platte Purchase Middle School project.
At the Platte Purchase Middle School Project, construction progress is continuing in the gym, locker room, and commons while repair work is nearly 98% complete. Roof blocking, roof decking, and roofing is taking place in the gym and commons area. Air barrier and brick veneer continues on the south side of the building. Overhead rough-in of piping and conduits and interior stud in the ceiling area is being installed in the commons as well as band and flex performance areas. CMU block structure is going up on the 2nd floor classroom area. Parking lot base is nearly 90% complete, and the football and track areas is ongoing with utilities, curbs, and sidewalks with the intent that turf will be installed before the end of the year pending weather.
2023-24 Academic Calendar Draft
Teachers, support staff, and parents on the calendar committee developed a proposed academic calendar for the 2023-24 school year. The draft was formulated based on required student hours, teacher contract days, historical parent and staff survey data, parent and staff feedback regarding PLC days, as well as consideration of the alignment with other Northland districts from a programming perspective. Based on feedback, the draft calendar has the first day of school on August 22, the last day of school on May 22, and potential makeup days are planned for May 23, 24, and 28-31. It is important to note this calendar makes a shift from 2-hour early release days for Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to full-day Professional Learning Days. The change in approach will provide teachers with more efficient and focused time for professional development, while reducing the number of days parents have to find day care alternatives for their children. Public review of the draft calendar occurs from December 16, 2022 to January 9, 2023. Comments may be emailed to Vicki Diggs. The Board will vote on approval of the calendar at the January board meeting.
Construction Manager Approved for NWDC
At the board meeting, JE Dunn Construction was approved to be the Construction Manager at Risk for the new Northland Workforce Development Center (NWDC). JE Dunn was one of three firms that were interviewed by the evaluation team. The construction of the NWDC is contingent upon raising $30,000,000 to match the state award. JE Dunn and other Northland partners will also play a role in the capital campaign efforts.
Teaching and Learning Key Process: Tiered Support Update
At the December meeting, Dr. Jennifer Beutel, and Dr. Alicia Casey presented a key process update on the District's Teaching and Learning System focused on Tiered Support. Updates regarding some of the teams within the Pupil Services department were provided relevant to the provision of interventions to assist students. Specific process improvement actions for special education, reading/math improvement, early learning, English learners, gifted education, and overall behavioral support were shared in alignment with increasing student achievement and a sense of belonging for all learners.
Real World Learning Initiative Update
A Real World Learning (RWL) update was provided to board members at the December meeting. Dr. Mike Brown, Dr. Aaron Duff, Brian Noller, and Mikyla Murphy presented updates on key areas of impact. Dr. Duff, Director of Secondary Education, provided an update on work connected to the development of PCR-3's "Portrait of a Graduate." A Portrait of a Graduate is a description of the essential skills our school community believes all students need upon graduation. Mr. Noller, Director of Community, School, and Business Partnerships, shared updates on two RWL opportunities designed in the new space at PCHS: Pirate Store and Common Grounds, our apparel and coffee shops. Mrs. Murphy, Post-Secondary Advisor, provided an update on her work with PCHS students as they plan for their next steps beyond graduation.
