State of the City Address Monday, Feb. 13


Get on Garland's inside track to start off 2023!


The State of the City Address is back in-person this year! Don't miss this chance to get all the latest from Mayor Scott LeMay and speak directly with representatives of City departments, including public safety, utilities, neighborhood services and many others.


The open house with City departments will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. The Mayor's address will begin at 6:30 p.m.


Video presentation of the address will be available online at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at GarlandTX.gov.

Garland Welcomes New Risk Management Director


Julie Whiteman joined the City of Garland as Risk Management Director on Feb. 6. She brings more than 18 years of risk management experience within the private and public sectors.


Most recently, since 2009 Whiteman served as Director of Risk Management for Richardson Independent School District. She is a member of The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research and the Texas Association of School Business Officials.

Library Receives Donation from Garland Area Makerspace


Garland Area Makerspace donated $7,200 for use in the new makerspace at the Central Library.


The donation will be used for sewing machines, embroidery machines, a plotter and glow forge.

February Is Black History Month


February is Black History Month, a time to remember important people, events and contributions in the United States.


During February the City will celebrate with a variety of events such as lectures, movies and exhibits that recognize the history of Black Americans. Check back each week to see more activities and events throughout the month.

Creativity Nights Tuesdays in February

 

Creativity Nights will feature a new, simple craft each week. Crafts in February celebrate Black History Month. Some crafts will utilize STEAM concepts, and instructions will be available in English and Spanish.


Families with children ages 3 to 9 may drop in to the Central Library, 625 Austin St., between 6 and 7 p.m. every Tuesday in February to complete the crafts.


The event is free and no registration is required.

History Presentation: Authority on Black Dallas in Reconstruction and Beyond


Friends of Garland's Historic Magic 11th Street will host a presentation on the Reconstruction history of the Dallas area at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Granger Recreation Center, 1310 W. Avenue F.


Lenora M. Casmore, a charter member of Remembering Black Dallas, Inc., will share about sites that were instrumental in the post-Civil War era and beyond, as well as about efforts to make sure this history is preserved and remembered.

Garland Senior Prom Tuesday, Feb. 14


Seniors 55 and older are invited to join us this Valentine's Day for the Garland Senior Prom!


Enjoy food, music, a photo booth and dancing to the oldies from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. 


The event is free, but registration at any Garland recreation center, Carver Senior Center or at the door is required.

Throwback Thursday Movie Series: "10 Things I Hate About You" Wednesday, Feb. 15

 

The Downtown Garland Business Association presents a free screening of "10 Things I Hate About You" (rated PG-13) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.

 

Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in this modernized William Shakespeare comedy.

 

Dress in a movie-themed costume for a chance to win Downtown Dollars! Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking for all Plaza Theatre events is available at the Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Sip, Shop and See at Thirsty Third Thursday

 

Celebrate Thirsty Third Thursdays in Downtown Garland from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Visit participating locations during their extended business hours and enjoy a complimentary beverage while you shop.

Garland Symphony Orchestra Friday, Feb. 17


The Garland Symphony Orchestra continues its exciting "Music that Grows on You" season with violinist Simone Spadino at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training Saturday, Feb. 18


The 2023 severe weather season is around the corner. Are you prepared to recognize clues that suggest large hail, flash flooding or a possible tornado?

 

The National Weather Service will host its free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. This training is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary.

Garland Board & Volunteer Fair Tuesday, Feb. 28


Join us for an evening of networking and visiting with several area nonprofits to find your next volunteer opportunity!


This year's Board & Volunteer Fair will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

Plan Commission

Feb. 13

The Garland Plan Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

Overnight Shutdowns Planned at Bush Turnpike, I-30 Interchange

The North Texas Turnpike Authority will perform routine maintenance on the Bush Turnpike interchange with Interstate 30 in Garland from the evening of Monday, Feb. 13, to the morning of Sunday, Feb. 19. Learn more.

Friday, Feb. 17, is the last day candidates may file for a place on the ballot for the May 6 City of Garland General Election for Mayor and City Council Districts 3, 6, 7 and 8. Learn more at GarlandTX.gov.


Flu Shots and Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Available at Garland Public Health Clinic

This year's flu vaccine and the bivalent COVID-19 booster are available at the Garland Public Health Clinic. Flu shots are available for adults, children and seniors who are insured. Low-cost flu vaccines for uninsured children and adults are also available. It is recommended that individuals wait at least two months after completion of the primary COVID vaccination series or their most recent booster.
