Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Women Together

Would you like an opportunity to meet with other women for reading, reflection and discussion on matters of the Christian faith? If so, please consider coming to Women Together, which meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:15. Women from St. Monica's, Trinity, St. John's, and friends currently participate in WT, and all are welcome. For the first series of the program year, beginning September 14th and continuing through October, the featured book will be Firstlight by Sue Monk Kidd (available at Amazon). The meeting is planned to take place in the Reception Room at St. John's, on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford (with all attendees wearing masks); however, if the Covid situation changes, the meeting will be via Zoom. Please contact Enid Oberholtzer (tomenidjas@aol.com) or Jo-Ann Sadosky (joann.sadosky43@gmail.com) for more information.

An Opportunity to Resettle an Afghan Refugee Family

Trinity church, together with St. Patrick St. Anthony (Hartford), is going to resettle one of the thousands of refugee families now fleeing Afghanistan. Trinity has a decades-long history of helping refugees, and we are now privileged to continue that tradition. We are going to help our new family find housing, furnishings, clothing, jobs for the adults, English lessons, health care, and public education for the children. There are big jobs and little jobs for us to do -- a job to fit every volunteer. Please contact Anne Rapkin for more information (860-521-5992; a.rapkin@snet.net).

Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers for by doing that some have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.  —Hebrews 13:1-2
Welcoming Refugees: Deepening Our Understanding of Culture--Theirs and Ours

Wednesday, 9/22 from 6-7:30 on Zoom

We all know we have cultural beliefs and values, but often give little thought to them when we are working with immigrants and refugees in their struggles to acculturate into the US. We arm ourselves with general knowledge about their culture, while ignoring our own. Yet often we automatically see things through our own cultural lenses, which hinders our ability to help refugees adapt to this new land. Through the use of numerous examples of cultural disconnects, this session will help participants explore the broad categories of culture, their own cultural lenses, and offer suggestions for more in depth exploration in times of cultural disconnect or discordance to enhance our ability to assist refugees.

This session will be presented via Zoom and moderated by Dr. Judi Durham and will be joined by Mr. Naji Aldabaan, whose family was co-sponsored under Judi’s leadership and whose family’s story was featured in Welcome to the New World.

Judi Durham, Ph.D., LPC, is a psychotherapist with a focus on trauma; and Professor Emeritus, University of Saint Joseph. Her areas of concentration include multicultural & international counseling, and the intersection of culture, diversity and social justice in the provision of mental health services.

To RSVP go please contact the office (office@trinityhartford.org) and Barbara will send you a registration link.

A Zoom link will be sent after you register.

Response to Hurricane Ida

On Sunday, August 29, sixteen years after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Ida made landfall in the same region. This Category 4 storm brought flooding and damaging winds that caused a loss of water to hundreds of thousands and a loss of electricity to over 1 million people. Episcopal Relief & Development is working closely with the Diocese of Louisiana and other regional partners in what will be a long-term response. Your generous gift will help alleviate suffering for the most vulnerable residents impacted by Hurricane Ida. Please visit episcopalrelief.org/hurricane-relief to make a gift today.

Ongoing Crisis in Haiti

On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest portion of Haiti. This devastating earthquake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace on Monday night and much of Tuesday. More than 1 million people, including more than half a million children, have been impacted by the back-to-back disasters, and the death toll is close to 2000. Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners are responding immediately with direct assistance to vulnerable households in the region, as partners plan long-term recovery. Your generous gift can provide assistance to help people in the wake of these disasters. To assist in these efforts, visit episcopalrelief.org/haiti-relief.
Trinity Book Group

All are welcome to attend Trinity's Book Group, which will resume meeting in person for its first meeting of the program year: Friday, September 24th, 7:00-9:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. Masks will be worn (except when eating) but will not inhibit the lively and interesting discussion sure to take place! The featured book is The Story of More by Hope Jahren. Mark and Linda MacGougan will host the meeting at their home in West Hartford. Please let them know if you plan to attend. (macgougans@gmail.com; 860-561-1588) Hope to see you!

Please send all materials for the October issue, which will cover all events and activities in October and November, to voice@trinityhartford.org. Thank you!
