A Message from Councilmember Malnar

August 28, 2020

Dear Sahuaro District Residents,

Over the past 3 ½ years the residents of the Sahuaro District have been greeted by my assistant, Shelli Henson, when calling or emailing my office. She has worked tirelessly to follow up with resident concerns and complaints. Shelli has decided to take another job and will be leaving the City Council Office on September 1, 2020.

I want to publicly thank Shelli for all she has done to improve the lives of citizens in Glendale. Her efforts with code compliance and many city issues has been a tremendous help. She will be missed and we wish her the best of luck in her new job.

Please welcome Shannon Beck who will be filling in for Shelli as my Council Assistant. You can reach her at sbeck@glendaleaz.com or 623.930.2250.

In other news, the City's Code Review Council Committee has completed its recommendation for updating our residential parking regulations.  The city Council will review and discuss the recommendation before final adoption.  There will also be public hearings to allow citizen to participate in the process.   The Code committee will  now review and make recommendation for  changes to other areas of our nuisance code such as landscaping, right of way maintenance, and residential  curb side parking.

Stay healthy and stay hydrated. Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,

Ray Malnar
Vice Mayor
Sahuaro District

 "GOLD STAR" BUSINESSES
TAKE EXTRA STEPS IN PANDEMIC
New program helps Glendale businesses go above and beyond
for customer peace of mind

The Glendale Chamber of Commerce and Visit Glendale are starting a program designed to help consumers and the visitors who come to Glendale understand the sanitization and health protocols local businesses follow. The idea is to highlight those businesses that have pledged to exceed the recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Many consumers are still concerned about visiting local businesses and restaurants. A lot of these businesses are struggling because of the lack of foot traffic that may be entering their once thriving business. The "Glendale Gold Star" program will help businesses to implement CDC recommended protocols and help customers to be informed about the sanitization and health standards being used in Glendale businesses.

"We wanted businesses to have a way to show their commitment to going above the minimum standards and for visitors and residents alike to be able to easily identify those businesses that have pledged to do so," said Visit Glendale Administrator Danielle Dutsch.

MARICOPA COUNTY
SMALL BUSINESS
RELIEF PROGRAM

The Maricopa County Small Business Relief Program is entering a new phase, one that will enable more local businesses and non-profits (501(c)3) to get reimbursed for financial losses incurred during the pandemic.

"Now we want to open up this financial assistance to more organizations that have suffered financial losses during the pandemic because the success of our small business community is crucial to a full economic recovery," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman, District 4.

Starting on August 17th, applications will be accepted for an expanded version of the program. Changes include:
  • Raising the maximum grant amount from $10,000 to $25,000
  • Expanded the time frame of eligible lost revenues
  • Raising the ceiling on the maximum number of employees and gross sales a qualifying business or non-profit can have
  • Removing certain pre-qualifications
Maricopa County is once again partnering with the Arizona Community Foundation to administer the program. Grants will be provided on a rolling, first come, first served basis until funding is exhausted or the grant period closes. Applications will be accepted from August 17 through October 2, 2020.
