UC San Diego Intertribal Resource Center

We're excited to welcome you back to the Center. We are currently open M-Th 10-3pm. Masks are mandatory. No food or drinks allowed. Limited capacity. All visitors must abide by UC San Diego Covid-19 protocols and present staff with symptom screener results to enter space. We continue to monitor UCSD's Return to Learn guidelines as we return to in-person activities safely and cautiously. We also expect to continue online and hybrid programs and events as appropriate and/or necessary.

Ask a Native Triton...
Each month we like to profile one of our amazing Native American students at UC San Diego. If you would like to nominate a Native American student at UC San Diego for us to feature you can email us at itrc@ucsd.edu.
This month the ITRC is proud to introduce
our new Graduate Community Intern, Lauren!
She is joining the ITRC to support student programs and help continue building community for our Native Triton family.

Lauren Smith
Tribal Affiliation: Chickasaw
Hometown: Bakersfield, CA
Degree Program: Ph.D., Experimental Psychology

What do you like best about UC San Diego?
UC San Diego faculty value promoting creativity and individualism. They encourage students to be themselves and to thread that into their work. It is a great environment to express your creativity!

How do you like to spend a free Saturday afternoon?
Reading a murder mystery novel or trying to write my own!

What advice do you have for Native American high school students thinking about college?
Research resources available to Native American students. There are lots of scholarship/fellowships available for Native students (within universities and through private organizations). It may take some digging, but they are out there and can really help financially!
What We've Been Up To
Ha Kwaiyo Tule Boat Launch
The ITRC Director, Elena Hood, was privileged to attend the recent Tule Boat Launch hosted by Native Triton alum, Dr. Stanley Rodriguez, the La Posta Boys and Girls Club of the Kumeyaay Nation, Kumeyaay Community College, the UC Natural Reserve System, Southern Indian Health Council and the new Kosay Kumeyaay Market. Over 20 traditional vessels were launched into Mission Bay in a display of Kumeyaay engineering and craftsmanship. There are numerous opportunities such as this to learn about Kumyaay traditions locally, check out the schedule of classes at Kumeyaay Community College, visit the new Kosay Kumeyaay Market in Old Town and keep an eye out here for more great events.
Native American Welcome Dinner
In early October, Native Tritons gathered for the first time in person at the Martin Johnson House! We welcomed new undergrad and grad students along with our alumni.

We enjoyed good food, met some new friends, and ended the night with a beautiful sunset.
