Fifth Sunday in Lent
March 21, 2021; 11:00 a.m.
Dear People of Ascension,

This week our church has been honored to host 16 hunger strikers who are fighting for the passage of a bill currently before the NY State Legislature, which would create a Fund of $3.5 billion in this year's budget to provide relief to workers who are otherwise excluded from government help. They are cash economy workers (domestic workers, delivery workers, vendors, laundry workers etc.), undocumented workers and recently incarcerated workers, among others. Many of them have labored throughout this pandemic year in roles deemed essential, but unprotected and excluded from vital supports for them and their families.

The bill is in negotiation and there is a real opportunity for NY State to do justice for our excluded siblings and create a model for the rest of the country. Please, contact your legislators and Governor Cuomo and urge their support for Bill Senate Bill S4543/A5421. And please keep the strikers and their struggle in your prayers.

Ascension's vestry voted last night to send a letter of support for this campaign to our representatives. I am so grateful for their leadership!

When I heard about the strike, I thought immediately of the reading from Ash Wednesday: "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke?" We put this verse on the sign outside the church this Lent, long before I heard about this Fund for Excluded Workers. Rarely have I witnessed such a direct application of the scripture!

Surely this is the fast God chooses. May this Lent bring justice and hope.

Liz

Collect of the Day
Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lessons
Reader: Stanley Weinberg

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Psalm 51:1-13  (St. Helena Psalter)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; *
   in your great compassion blot out my offenses.
Wash me through and through from my wickedness *
   and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, *
   and my sin is ever before me.
Against you only have I sinned *
   and done what is evil in your sight.
And so you are justified when you speak *
   and upright in your judgment.
Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, *
   a sinner from my mother’s womb.
For behold, you look for truth deep within me, *
   and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; *
   wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.
Make me hear of joy and gladness, *
   that the body you have broken may rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins, *
   and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, *
   and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence, *
   and take not your holy Spirit from me.
Give me the joy of your saving help again, *
   and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

Reader: June Fait

Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

#699 Jesus, Lover of my soul
Aberystwyth
Jesus, Lover of my soul,
let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high:
hide me, O my Savior, hide,
till the storm of life be past;
safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none,
hangs my helpless soul on thee;
leave, ah! leave me not alone,
still support and comfort me!
All my trust on thee is stayed;
all my help from thee I bring;
cover my defenseless head
with the shadow of thy wing.

Plenteous grace with thee is found,
grace to cleanse from every sin;
let the healing streams abound,
make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
freely let me take of thee:
spring thou up within my heart,
rise to all eternity.
The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to John.

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Anthem
Thou Knowest Lord
Henry Purcell (1659-1695)
Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts;
Shut not thy merciful ears unto our pray'rs;
But spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty.
O holy and most merciful Saviour,
Thou most worthy Judge eternal,
Suffer us not at our last hour,
For any pains of death to fall away from Thee.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.
The Lord's Prayer

 Our Father, who art in heaven,
     hallowed be thy Name,
     thy kingdom come,
     thy will be done,
          on earth as it is in heaven.
 Give us this day our daily bread.
 And forgive us our trespasses,
     as we forgive those
          who trespass against us.
 And lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
 For thine is the kingdom,
     and the power, and the glory,
     for ever and ever. Amen.

#442 In the cross of Christ I glory
Tomter
In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o’er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.

When the woes of life o’ertake me,
hopes deceive, and fears annoy,
never shall the cross forsake me:
lo, it glows with peace and joy.

When the sun of bliss is beaming
light and love upon my way,
from the cross the radiance streaming
adds new luster to the day.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,
by the cross are sanctified;
peace is there that knows no measure,
joys that through all time abide.

In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o’er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.
