 NEW  CONGRATULATIONS!


Congratulations to all our graduates and the families, friends, faculty, and staff who supported them throughout their UHMC years. We wish each one of you the very best as you move on to your professional path or as you continue your education. And mahalo to everyone at UHMC who made Spring 2022 a safe and healthy semester.  NEW  STUDENT EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR


UHMC highly values its student employees who are an important part of UHMC's community and bring their outstanding talents to our work environment. The Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) award was created to recognize exceptional student employees for their contributions and achievements. They are nominated by their supervisors. The winner receives the following:

  • Scholarship amount towards their tuition (this year's amount is $1,000)
  • Their name engraved on a perpetual plaque to be displayed in their department
  • Certificate of Distinguished Service


The Student Employee of the Year 2021-2022 is Eternity Ray Taclan Chang. She began working in the Counseling Center as a Peer Navigator (PN) in 2019 and is now its Senior PN. She plays a major role assisting many incoming, continuing, and returning students. Eternity's contribution was recently recognized in the Chancellor's column, “Ka'ana Mana'o” in The Maui News (Feb. 26/27). We commend her for her dedication to the college and community.


Honorable Mention goes to Julieann Queja. She began working as part of the Dean’s Office in March 2021, assisting with COVID-19 related campus assignments. Julieann is also employed as Health and Communications Assistant to the Marketing Committee and, as part of the Human Resources Office, as an Office Assistant. She was also recognized in the Chancellor's column, “Ka'ana Mana'o” in The Maui News (Feb. 26/27). She goes above and beyond in completing tasks and assignments in all departments.

 NEW  SUMMER ON CAMPUS


COVD 19 cases are rising in Hawai‘i. If you plan to come to campus during the summer, please be vigilant – wear a mask indoors, wash your hands often, social distance indoors when possible. If you feel ill, please don’t come to campus and please get tested.

 NEW  AgCurious RECRUITMENT


The next cohort of GoFarm Hawai’i starts in June. If you or someone you know is interested in farming, please join the Zoom session on Monday, June 6th at 5:30 p.m. You’ll hear from Maui GoFarmers about what the program is like and help you decide if it’s for you. Please see flyer here.

 NEW  DISTANCE AND ONLINE TEACHING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT


Summer 2022 course includes six facilitated and asynchronous online modules. Each module is fully online, immersive and designed to guide, prepare and support you with the design and development of your distance and/or online course. This course is designed for you to experience an online course as a student in the hopes the experience with provide you with a model, new ideas and renewed strategies to elevate your course.


You may be eligible for an overload. Complete three modules for $200; six modules for $400.


Module 1 – Introduction to Distance and Online Teaching, June 6th to June 12th

Module 2 – Quality Standards and Best Practices, June 13th to June 19th

Module 3 – Creating Equity in the Online Classroom, June 20th to June 26th

Module 4 – Introduction to Course Design and Laulima Tools, June 27th to July 3rd

Module 5 – More Laulima Tools, July 4th to July 10th

Module 6 – Learning Technology, July 11th to July 17th

 NEW  LIBRARY BUILDING SUMMER HOURS


The building will be closed from today, May 16th to Friday, May 20th except for equipment pick up and drop off. Starting Monday, May 23rd, the building will open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Please call 984-3359 or email uhmclib@hawaii.edu with questions or for more information.

 UPDATED  PAID INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY


The Kekaulike Title III program is offering a paid internship opportunity for Native Hawaiian undergraduates attending UH Maui College and are interested in transferring to UH Mānoa.


Application deadline is May 30th.


Research-based internship. Opportunities to work with/within educational programs, library science, and ʻāina based sites. Accepted students will be placed and scheduled to sites that best align with their academic goals. Students can earn up to $4,000 in 4 weeks!

 UPDATED  NHHP HUI KUMU SESSIONS


Randy Awo and Dr. Jonathan Osorio will continue the discussion Nā Hua Hoʻohuli i ka Pono began in April about engaging non-conservation communities in important conversations about our environment and building collaborative relationships to advance our collective work to preserve and protect our natural resources.


These virtual sessions are free and geared toward college students or emerging professionals (0-5 years of paid experience) who are interested in building a career in conservation. Please feel free to share with those in your network who may be interested in attending.

 NEW  TUITION-FREE SUMMER COURSES


As part of the Kekaulike transfer program and E Hoʻoulu Lāhui Hawaiian Studies program at UH Maui College, courses are being offered tuition-free for eligible students. These courses are being offered in-person with an online section for off-island students or students who are otherwise unable to attend in-person. For more information, visit website. NEW FRIENDS OF HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK SCHOLARSHIPS


The Friends of Haleakalā National Park is looking for applicants for three scholarship grants of $1,000 each for the 2022-2023 academic year. Successful applicants will be, or already are, studying in a field related to the biology, ecology and/or conservation of ecosystems such as that of Haleakalā National Park. Eligible are Hawai’i residents either graduating from high school this spring and admitted into an accredited college or university, or continuing a college program, within the United States. The application deadline is May 31.


The three scholarships honor the lives and work of Don Reeser, Superintendent of Haleakalā National Park from 1988 to 2005, Mary Evanson, co-founder of the non-profit Friends of Haleakalā National Park (FHNP), and Dr. Fern Duvall, a dedicated advocate for every aspect of the natural environment of Maui.


The Friends of Haleakalā National Park is a non-profit that supports the Park’s mission to preserve and protect Haleakalā's unique ecosystems, scenic character and associated Native Hawaiian culture.

 NEW  NĀ PUA NO‘EAU MAUI SUMMER EVENT


Applications are open for ʻIke Kaʻa: Vehicle Knowledge Summer Institute for students currently in grades 9 through 11 or who hold a Driver's Permit. This one-week, in-person Institute allows students to learn about vehicle maintenance and care with hands-on practice led by our UHMC Automotive Instructor, as well as huakaʻi and cultural enrichment during our afternoon sessions. June 13 – 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., daily. Institute takes place on the UHMC Campus. Deadline to apply is Monday, May 23rd.

NEW KAPI‘OLANI SUMMER CAMP CALL FOR PROPOSALS


Kapi‘olani Summer Camp is on from August 1st to August 5th. And camp organizers want to hear from YOU! Last year, 45 presenters and 245 participants from across Hawai‘i and beyond joined in this free, Zoom-based event. They’re hoping to make an even bigger splash this year with some summer professional development for everyone...and a fun-filled (in-person) Friday Field Day!

If needed, we will implement mitigation measures that may include vaccination or testing, expanded requirements for mask wearing, etc. Please see the UH COVID-19 Dashboards and the UH COVID-19 Response Based on CDC Community Level website for up-to-date information regarding our campuses.


COVID-19 TESTING – If you need a COVID test, please call the Campus Health Center at 984-3493 to schedule an appointment. If you have medical insurance, please bring your medical card and ID when you come for testing. But you do not need medical insurance to get a test. The testing is free.
