President’s Points of Pride
We are seeing record application numbers for the fall that we have not seen in years! This trend is not occurring nationwide. Shepherd’s application numbers are the highest we have seen in five years. Additionally, our admission deposits are up 14% compared to this time last year. This fall, we’ll welcome students from 17 states and five countries. What tremendous news! Thanks to the Shepherd community for your role in recruiting and enrolling our incoming class!

Shepherd leaders share Safe Zone training with CASA-EP
On July 25, Shepherd hosted staff and volunteers from CASA of the Eastern Panhandle (WV) for a special training program to enhance ally and advocacy abilities when working with the LGBTQ+ community. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children), a national organization with a local presence, recruits, trains, and empowers community volunteers to advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. The training, based on the nationally accredited Safe Zone curriculum, was presented by Shepherd staff and faculty Dr. Kelly Hart, Dr. Richard Stevens, and Dr. Ann Wendle. “The training was important and timely,” said Dr. Hart, who also serves on the CASA of the Eastern Panhandle board. “Our training and discussions focused on some of the extra challenges facing at-risk LGBTQ+ youth.”

Dr. Spencer inducted into Rotary, joins CATF board
Congratulations are in order for Shepherd’s new provost and vice president for academic affairs Dr. Stephen Spencer! On July 26, Dr. Spencer was inducted into the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown during its breakfast meeting at the Bavarian Inn. This honor comes shortly after Dr. Spencer became a member of the board of the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF).

Busy summer for Appalachian studies
The Center for Appalachian Studies and Communities has been keeping busy lately—starting with the spring launch of Voices from Appalachia Radio Show. The weekly broadcast airs live on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. The podcast website has the link to the archived shows as well as the link to the live broadcast. The guest for Saturday’s episode will be Gretchen Moran Laskas, award-winning author and former Appalachian Writer-in-Residence at Shepherd. In June, the Global Appalachia Celtic Roots program headed to the Scottish Highlands and Orkney Islands for 12 nights of exploration. The West Virginia Humanities Council Summer Teacher Institute ran July 11-22, featuring a mix of lectures, cultural events, and field trips. Part of the mix: a reading by Gretchen Moran Laskas, which was featured in The Shepherdstown Chronicle. Looking forward to seeing what’s on tap for fall!
