Rabbi Aaron Weininger, Adath Jeshurun Congregation, reflects on the holidays of
Sukkot and Simchat Torah as we continue to navigate life during these unique times.
The holiday of Sukkot, the celebration of booths, pushes us out the door and into the natural world. Maybe it wasn't designed for our unpredictable climate, especially as we think about the commandment "leishev ba'sukkah" (to dwell in the sukkah). The rabbis imagined this commandment as all encompassing: we eat, study, and even sleep in our sukkot! We live in the impermanence. We don't run away from it. Maybe we learn something from it.
There is a lot in our world right now that is changing and turning upside down. Sukkot comes to teach us that we have much to learn if we keep our eyes and ears open to a constantly changing world. What grounds us? Who grounds us? How do we acknowledge that?
The world may feel disorientating but hopefully we find our feet along the way. When we do, we have the opportunity to take hold of Torah and dance, as Simchat Torah marks the completion of Torah and its beginning. May we find ourselves moving outside in peace, and even finding space to dwell in the Sukkah and dance at this turbulent time.

Total Distance Learning Program Signup!
Minimesters 3 and 4
Enrollment for Session 2 (November 16-January 22) of the Total Distance Learning Program (TDLP) is now open! All families currently enrolled in TDLP, and families who would like to enroll in TDLP for the first time, must complete the following form in order to officially opt-in.
In order to ensure your student's enrollment in TDLP for Minimesters 3 and 4, you must complete the form by the beginning of Shabbat on Friday, October 30. Any families who have not completed this form by October 30 will be automatically enrolled in in-person learning at Heilicher. Students may not opt-in OR opt-out of TDLP outside of the enrollment deadline. Please complete 1 form per student.

Minimester 2 Grade-Level Schedules (for in-person weeks)
Minimester 2 begins on Monday, October 12!
Attached is the Minimester 2 schedule by grade level for Mondays-Thursdays of in-school weeks. As you know, Fridays are a shortened day (ending at 12:30 p.m.), primarily devoted to special programming, including T'filah and Kabbalat Shabbat.
If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher or advisor.

As a reminder, we require that all families complete the COVID-19 Health Screening Form on Sycamore each morning before dropping your child(ren) off at school. This form is critically important to keeping our Heilicher community healthy and safe!

After-School Playground Use
To ensure the health and safety of our Heilicher community as well as those families whose students participate in Club J (the Sabes JCC's school-age child care program), we ask that Heilicher students do not use the playground equipment during after-school hours. At these times, the playground is reserved for Club J student use. Thank you for your understanding!

All-School Kabbalat Shabbat
Our virtual, All-School Kabbalat Shabbat will be tomorrow, Friday, October 9, at 11:00 a.m.
This week during Kabbalat Shabbat we will also be celebrating Hoshana Rabbah as the end of Sukkot approaches. We'll be beating our willows on the ground, so if you can find a willow tree, bring a small branch to this gathering. If you have a lulav and etrog, bring those, and you may use your willow branches from your lulav. The Zoom link is in the

High School Information Evening
This virtual event is an opportunity for parents and students to ask questions of a small panel of public and independent high school counselors. We will begin the evening by hearing from some alumni parents who have already been through this process, followed by short presentations from each school. We will then have an opportunity to ask questions in smaller groups.
