For this week’s story on @AriannaHuff’s @Thrive, we are excited to present @DemiWeitz’s story from our forthcoming book, Stone Soup for a Sustainable World: Life-Changing Stories of Young Heroes.
Demi Weitz imagined a very different kind of 17th birthday than what it turned out to be. When the COVID pandemic got in the way of her party plans, her father organized a Zoom party for her, with some of his recording artist friends. This gave Demi an idea: why not organize Zoom concerts to benefit charities? That’s how Quarantunes, an amazing success story, began.

Thursday: Severn Suzuki, British Columbia, Canada
Severn Suzuki grew up in British Columbia, and she learned a great deal from her parents about the importance of protecting the earth, and honoring indigenous traditions. But it was on her return from a trip to the Amazon where her family had been helping an activist who was fighting the construction of a hydroelectric dam in the Brazilian rainforest that she had her wake-up call. As the plane ascended above the jungle, she saw fires “everywhere.” Though she was still very young, she decided then and there that she had to do something about it.

Friday: Mitzi Jonelle Tan, YACAP Philippines
As a college student, @Mitzi Tan went to work with the Lumad, an indigenous people who live in a remote area of the Philippines. She learned from them that people were being displaced, harassed, even killed, just for protecting their lands from mining companies. She decided to devote her efforts toward defending and protecting not only the environment, but the people most affected by climate change.
