Curbside Pick-Up Service Continues
We are continuing the Curbside Pickup option for those patrons who would rather not come in the building. They take place on Mondays and Wednesdays 10-noon and 4-6pm. Also, on Friday mornings 10-noon. Place desired items on hold, wait for the confirmation that they are ready and then schedule a pickup time within the week online or by calling the library. Just be sure to either schedule a curbside pickup for your holds or come in during business hours to pick up your holds. PLEASE DON'T DO BOTH!
Statewide Interlibrary Loans
Interlibrary loans will resume on September 15! There will be mandatory quarantines of materials that go out to other libraries and quarantine of materials we borrow from other libraries. We know that many people have been anxiously awaiting the return of ILL, but remember, patrons are limited to just 5 ILL requests per month. And we have a new staff member in charge of ILLs. Her name is Olivia Pexton. She can be reached by phone, 603-516-6215 or via email at [email protected]. For more information on ILL and how to submit a request, visit our website.

Census 2020
Remember to fill out the Census if you haven't already. Covid-19 really put a kink into the works as far as getting the Census completed. It is not too late! Go to https://2020census.gov/en.html or stop into the library to ask for helping getting to the site. It is quick and you'll be doing your part as a citizen to make sure you are counted. Many government agencies and services rely on accurate census numbers to make decisions about spending needs. This is the last official way to get counted until the next census in 2030. Everyone should be counted: babies, homeless populations, and more. It really matters!
Banned Books Week
September brings Banned Books Week, which highlights the issue of censorship. As librarians, we believe that everyone should have free access to information. We realize that some topics can be sensitive to talk about with friends and family. We hope that people who have questions know they can come to the library to get those questions answered. Some of the most challenged or banned books from last year include; "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood, the Harry Potter books, "Drama" by graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier, and others. For more information go to http://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks.

Library Card Renewals
Because of Covid-19, we pushed library card renewal dates back for many patrons. If you gave us an email address, you will receive a notice a month ahead of your card's expiration date. Typically, we ask that patrons come into the Library in person to renew their card. We are open and the renewal process is quick and easy. All you need to do is bring in your card and your photo ID showing your current Dover address. If your current address isn't on your ID, then please also bring in a utility bill, car registration or pay stub showing your name, a recent date and your physical address. If you'd prefer to continue using the Library remotely, we can renew your card online. To do this please send a photo of your library card, the front of your photo ID, and if necessary, a photo of your other proof of address to [email protected]. Please include "library card renewal" in the subject line.
Upcoming Programs
Virtual Programming continues, with some socially distant outside programming thrown in.

Movies on the Lawn
We are offering movies on the Library's front lawn on Monday and some Tuesday evenings. Movie times will get progressively earlier as *sniff* the daylight hours get shorter. See the schedule here or pick up a handy bookmark with the details at the Library. We are limited to 50 people per showing, and ask that everyone maintain social distance and wear a mask when not seated. Bring something to sit on and food and drink to enjoy. Please plan on taking your trash home with you after the movie.
Backyard Birds with Open World Explorers
Join Open World Explorers on Wednesday, September 23 at 6:30pm for this engaging and interactive online presentation featuring common and migrant visitors in New England. Learn identification tips, how to use feed to attract a diverse population and get to know the birds in your backyard! Register for this virtual program online on the library's events calendar. A meeting link will be sent out to your email the day of the event.

Teen Advisory Board
Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to join our Teen Advisory Board on Monday, September 14 at 6PM. Teen Advisory Board members help plan upcoming teen programs and services at the library. We want to know what you'd like the library to offer, especially during these challenging times. Your voice matters! This month's meeting will be held on the library's front lawn. Please register in case of bad weather, in which case we will meet virtually via RingCentral. A meeting link would be sent 30 minutes prior to the meeting's start time. All teens are welcome!
Teen Take & Makes
Teens in grades 7-12 are welcome to bring home a Take & Make Kit filled with supplies needed to make a small craft. The first kit will contain supplies to make two wish bracelets (one for you, and one for a friend!). Wish bracelet kits will be available beginning September 1, and can be picked up in the Teen Loft (one per teen, please). Be sure to check our event calendar for upcoming Take & Makes.
Virtual Cookbook Club
Join us for a virtual exploration of Magnolia Table by Joanna Gaines. Throughout the month of September, send in pictures of your dishes created with recipes from the book and a small description of your cooking process, how you felt about the recipe, and/or your thoughts on the book. We will share your creations on our social media pages throughout the month. Photos can be sent to Emily at [email protected], or tag us on Instagram @doverpubliclibrary. A copy of the book will be available at the main circulation desk to photocopy recipes, and it is also available on Hoopla Digital. Book Groups Resume in September
Grab your copies of Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg for the Morning Book Group at the library. By a strange quirk of fate, we have the physical copies of "Saint Mazie" by Jami Attenberg available to borrow at the Circulation Desk. We will try to meet outside on the lawn, hoping for good weather on Thursday, September 3 at 10am. Go ahead and register online for a Zoom meeting, just in case the weather does not cooperate. Otherwise, bring a chair and your mask and some sunscreen.

Pizza & Pages, our Teen Book Group, will meet again on Wednesday, September 16th at 6pm. Please check our event calendar for updates on book selection and whether the meeting will be in-person or virtual.

The Afternoon and Evening Book Group will be reading The Revisioners by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton for virtual & in-person discussion on Monday, Sept. 21st at 3 and 6:30Please register online if you'd like to attend virtually.

Get Lit group will meet on the lawn on Wednesday, September 30th at 6:30pm to discuss the book Writers and Lovers by Lily King. Copies of the book are available on Hoopla Digital and on the library's Kindles. Please register online for a RingCentral meeting in case of bad weather.
There are other virtual programs listed in the event calendar.
Please Return Materials in Outside Return Bins
Please remember to return all items in the outside book drops. They will go into quarantine for 3 days before they are checked in and taken off your account. There won't be fines for the quarantine period. Speaking of fines, they will start accruing for overdue items as of July 13. Be patient as we make the system contortions necessary to get it to work with all the craziness over the past few months. You may see fines on your account that you don't think should be there. They may disappear on their own, or you can certainly ask us about them when you are in.
Are you unsure what to read next, in a book rut, or are you looking for books that will capture your child's imagination? Let us help.  Answer a few quick questions about your reading habits, and let us do the rest.  We will gather some books, check them out to you, and make them available through our Book Pickup Service. This is a free service for all ages of readers. To start, fill out this form: https://bit.ly/3hHdhdO

Museum Passes
Museums are slowing starting to reopen, sometimes with timed entries to help with capacity and social distancing. Check our website for details. We've added a handy icon telling you at a glance whether the museum has reopened yet. Like with most things, things are changing quickly so check our site, but also be sure to look at the museum's site for the latest information relating to visits. This is most easily done through our website. http://www.dover.nh.gov/government/city-operations/library/what-we-have/museum-passes.html

The Library is Online 24/7
