We Welcome Back

Rev. Dr. Nehemiah Maji

This Sunday we welcome back to our pulpit a longtime partner in ministry, the Rev. Dr. Nehemiah Maji. He served as Pastor Sam’s Associate Pastor in the English Ministry of the Presbyterian Church of the Lord in Seoul, South Korea. He is the lead pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) English Service in Kaduna State, Nigeria, and the founder of Spurgeon Hope Ministry, also in Kaduna. He and his wife, Gladys, have three children, Favor (a King University student and FPC intern), Faith, and Felix.

Special Offering for Spurgeon Hope Ministry

We will take up this offering in both services this Sunday, March 19, for our partners in ministry, Spurgeon Hope Ministry. Our brothers and sisters in Kaduna State, Nigeria, are in danger of starving. Most of them make their living by farming but have had to give it up to avoid being killed amid the violence against Christians. With the region in turmoil, cash is scarce. For these reasons, our special offering for this month is to assist the work of Spurgeon Hope Ministry to care for their community in Kaduna State. We have also set up a special fund for online giving. Choose "Spurgeon Hope Ministry" in the Fund drop-down menu.

Holy Week Schedule

We will have many opportunities to worship together at FPC during Holy Week, and all services will be livestreamed as well. Our annual Egg Hunt and Barbecue will be held the day before Easter, and the church office will be closed the day after.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Anderson Park, 341 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Register here by April 1 and pay $30 to run the 5K course or $20 to walk the 1-mile course. Sign Up Today for Serve Orlando

Join us for a summer adventure in Orlando, Florida! We will leave from the church on Saturday, June 17, and drive down for a week of missions, beach, and fun. We will serve with a variety of ministries in the area, and we’ll have the option of a day at Universal Studios Florida Theme Park. We will stay in a dormitory at Forest Lake Academy, which will also provide our meals. We will return home Saturday, June 24.

We invite rising seventh grade to college students, families with rising first graders and up, and adults of all ages. This is an event you won’t want to miss! Start inviting your friends!

The cost of $400 per person includes transportation, camping, lodging in Orlando, meals (excluding travel meals), mission supplies, and a T-shirt. A day at the Universal park is an additional $115 per person. A deposit of $100 per person is due April 1. The total balance is due by June 17. Scholarships and family pricing are available.

Ready to go? Register here and pay the deposit. You can pay online here; choose “2023 Serve Orlando Mission Trip” in the Fund drop-down menu. Contact Katie Arnold for more information.

We’ll Be Sharing Christ April 8

We are looking for volunteers to serve our downtown neighbors at the Sharing Christ mission on Saturday, April 8. This act of service could be your final Lenten observance before Easter morning! In addition to donations of food and bottled water, we need a team to serve at the mission that evening and folks to prepare bag lunches ahead of time (this is a good family project). At this point we still need five chicken-macaroni casseroles for dinner, and two jars of grape jam (it’s easier to spread than jelly) and five boxes of Little Debbie fudge rounds for lunch. Casseroles can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the little kitchen fridge or freezer. We need willing hands to prep, serve, and clean up at the mission on Saturday evening. If you can help in any way, whether by contributing food or helping at the mission, please email Beth Flannagan or text 423-956-3837, or email Becca Tate or text 404-790-1223. This is a wonderful way to meet another part of our community!

Remember Your Lenten Devotional

Devotionals for use in personal and family reflection as we prepare for Easter are available at the church. Remember to pick yours up on Sunday. One booklet per household, please.

Join Us for Wednesday Night Fellowship

Our next Wednesday Night Fellowship will be March 22. Please join us for dinner at 5:30 in the fellowship hall and stay for educational activities for all ages.

Men’s Fellowship Breakfast Saturday

The Men’s Fellowship Breakfast will begin meeting again every third Saturday of the month, beginning March 18. We invite all males from sixth grade up to breakfast and Bible study in the fellowship hall at 7:30 a.m. If you want a ride or more information, please call the church office at 423-764-7176.

Get Involved in a Home Group

If you are not participating in a Home Group, you owe it to yourself to join or start one. A Home Group is a gathering of friends, neighbors, family members, or several families for weekly Bible study and fellowship. Each week we provide an intergenerational study to each group and also post it on the church website under Ministries: Home Groups.

If you would like to participate in a Home Group, facilitate a group, or start your own, please sign up here, and we will get you plugged in. You can join the conversation and stay up-to-date by joining the FPC Bristol Home Group Facebook group here and signing up for Home Group texts from Remind. For more information, email Dave Welch.

Gifts to the Church

Memorials and honoraria are published in the newsletter only after the family has been personally notified by our business office. Today we gratefully acknowledge the following gifts in memory of:

  • Tony Mitchell: to the Minister’s Discretionary Education Fund from Karen Pennington, from Bill & Ann Woods

Organist's Footnotes

Robert Holbrook will be our guest organist Sunday.

Max Reger (1873–1916; pictured) was a German composer, pianist, organist, conductor, and academic teacher. He worked as a concert pianist, as a music director at the Leipzig University Church, as a professor at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, and as a music director at the court of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen.

Reger wrote many works for organ, the most popular being the Benedictus from the collection Op. 59 and his Fantasy and Fugue on BACH, Op. 46. Today’s opening voluntary, “Chorale Prelude on Psalm 22” (“Oh Lord, do not forsake me”), is a gentle, unassuming piece. The hymn tune melody is played slowly on a separate manual above Reger’s highly chromatic accompaniment.

Vincent Lübeck (1654–1740) was a highly regarded North German composer and organist. In Hamburg he presided over one the largest organs of his day, a four-manual instrument with 67 stops. He enjoyed a remarkably high reputation in his lifetime and had numerous pupils, among which were two of his sons.

Despite Lübeck’s longevity and fame, very few of his compositions survive. Today’s closing voluntary, the D Minor Prelude and Fugue, is among the best of those. Like J. S. Bach, he was greatly influenced by Dietrich Buxtehude, who was well known for pushing the limits of virtuosity, with extended pedal sections and flashy flourishes in the manuals. In the interest of time, we will hear just the prelude and leave the complex fugue for another day—perhaps to a future recital. /Bob Greene
