OCTOBER 2020
October is a tricky month. After the back-to-school busyness of September and before the holiday hustle, it offers a deceptive lull which is actually chock full of change. Even the weather is shifty...it's a tad hotter than it oughta be, yet a chance of rain lurks on the horizon. It's the perfect month for a holiday like Halloween. (We're all in masks anyway!)

Just remember that while old dogs can learn new tricks and many cats love treats, no pet enjoys being frightened. Valley Humane Society has recently been working toward becoming a Fear Free certified shelter, a program designed to reduce stress in shelter animals. Learn more and find out how you can manage a Fear Free Happy Home of your own! In the meantime, check out our Halloween pet safety tips, below and enjoy a safe celebration with your furry family.
Subaru Loves Pets
We're so glad Subaru Loves Pets! Thanks to a generous grant from the ASPCA, Valley Humane Society is partnering with Livermore Subaru for the Subaru Loves Pets adoption event. Each happy adoption will not only provide a cat or dog with a loving family, but will benefit future rescue pets by generating a $100 donation to us from Subaru throughout the month of October. When you add some love to your life by choosing to adopt this month, you're also helping countless others.
Be An Animal Advocate
Sessions are enrolling now for Animal Advocates! This new online program offers animal-loving youth volunteer opportunities, and creates safe animal enrichment during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Teens age 12-15, and preteens age 8-11 will learn how they can make a difference for animals in our community through age-appropriate humane education lessons. Topics include animal welfare and pet responsibility, with a blend of DIY service-learning projects that can be completed at home. Each two-week sessions meets twice weekly.  Sign your student up today!
Happier Halloween
The garden-variety ghosts and goblins of Halloween should be a breeze this year after this frightful year, but you can ensure your pet stays safe and comfortable with our Halloween pet tips. From costumes to chocolate, you'll get an idea of what to watch out for and suggestions to make the holiday less harrowing for dogs and cats. Consider it our treat!
