CBRL news February 2019

Welcome to CBRL’s February newsletter. Earlier this month we received excellent news that five research projects where CBRL’s Amman institute will be collaborating as a local partner, have successfully secured funding – four from the AHRC Newton-Khalidi Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development in Jordan programme and one from the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund. More details to follow over the next few months. CBRL Amman is now looking to recruit a project manager to work on one of these projects – more details can be found here . We also have job opportunities for support staff in both our London office and in Amman – if you know of someone who may be interested, please spread the word! Last year, CBRL participated in the inaugural Alta’ir Durham-Jordan Creative Collaboration and hosted British poet Linda France in Amman. The Durham Book Festival/New Writing North have recently published this blog where the Jordanian author Mefleh Al-Adwan writes about his experience when he visited Durham in October. Discussions, workshops and round-table events from last year's Kalimat Palestinian literature festival, co-organised by CBRL's Kenyon Institute are now available to watch online. Next week, CBRL’s Toufic Haddad will be chairing a panel at the conference “ The International Politics of Middle East Migration - Problems, Policy, Practice " that is supported by the British Academy Rising Start Engagement Award and is taking place at the University of Birmingham on 7-8 March. Call for workshop participants: 24 - 27 April 2019 Water Resources: management and sustainability in Jordan from prehistory to the future Taking place at CBRL's Amman institute and coordinated by CBRL trustee Dr Matthew Jones, this call is now open to early career researchers based in Jordan (allocation for UK researchers is now fully booked) - deadline for applications is 8th March. Publication of Re-excavating Jerusalem by Kay Prag At the end of last year, CBRL member Dr Kay Prag's 2016 Schweich lectures were published in memory of Dame Kathleen M. Kenyon and to mark the centenary of CBRL's founding institute, the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (1919-2019). More here .

Diasporic Activism of Jewish Kurds from Iraq in Israel CBRL 2018 Pilot Award holder Dr Bahar Baser (University of Coventry) discusses her fieldwork that looks at the experiences of Iraqi Kurds who were airlifted to Israel in the early 1950s and aims to understand how these Kurds and their descendants manage multiple religious and ethnic identities while formulating a vibrant diaspora within Israel.   Read more.
