Welcome to SEI Climate Corps Fellow Alex Skowron


Alex Skowron is a Sustainability Data Fellow through the SEI Climate Corps program. Alex is a recent environmental science and mathematics graduate of Washington and Jefferson College (W&J) in southwestern PA.


Alex will be working on several projects for his fellowship, including:

  • Developing a sustainability progress dashboard
  • Creating a campus tree inventory geodatabase

Self-Service Waste Model Comes to Four Campus Buildings


The School of Law (Floors 1-4), Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL), EHS Building, and Community Engagement Center have rolled out the self-service waste model in their buildings! Learn more about the initiative and an approximate schedule of when it will be coming to your building on the EVS website.

Bike Workshop with Velocipede

The Office of Sustainability will be hosting a Bike Maintenance Workshop taught by Velocipede Bike Project. Learn how to remove and install wheels, change a tire/tube, lubricate a chain, and much more!

Waste Reduction Fellow Federal Work Study Position


The Office of Sustainability is seeking a Federal Work Study student to serve as a Waste Reduction Fellow. Responsibilities will include assisting UMB’s Office of Sustainability in implementing its Self-Service Waste Program and a pilot community composting program in partnership with Baltimore City’s Department of Public Works.

Freezer Rebate Program Reminder


The Green Labs Freezer Rebate Program has $20,000 worth of funding available on a first-come, first-serve basis for labs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) who are looking to replace an old, inefficient ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezer with a new, more efficient model. Applications will remain open until funding is depleted. For more information, visit the Green Labs webpage.


If you are interested in participating, please email sustainability@umaryland.edu to confirm eligibility for the freezer you are planning to purchase through BIORESCO.

Reminder: Participate in UMB Hungry


UMB Hungry is a food rescue initiative aiming to minimize food waste and feed hungry students at UMB. The program is currently being piloted on campus.

Sustainability Champions Series

We would like to recognize Giordana Segneri as a Sustainability Champion. Giordana is the assistant dean for marketing and communications at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) who has helped to communicate various sustainability initiatives at UMSON. In her personal life, she has turned her home into a haven for monarch butterflies and a farm for composting worms.
