Reading Our Feelings:
Understanding Emotions Through Books
2020 has been full of feelings--many of them new, not all of them good. The turmoil of a pandemic, social unrest, and a contentious election has given us much to process and read about.

We read to entertain ourselves and to educate ourselves. And sometimes, we read to educate ourselves about ourselves. Reading provides a space--and a vocabulary--to consider how we feel about our world and what's happening in it.

When very young, we express our feelings wholeheartedly. But as we grow and our emotions become more complex, we often struggle to handle our feelings, name them, and see their source. This is where books can help!

Follow a bird who wakes up grumpy and becomes cheerful with support from friends. Watch a girl cure herself of a mysterious ailment by braving embarrassment and admitting she likes something her peers don't like. Stories remind us that feelings are ok, make us who we are, and connect us with others who share our feelings!
