Storm Recovery Update, Sept. 11: Classroom Repairs at Isaac E. Young; Wall Removal at NRHS |

Dear New Rochelle Community:
I am writing to share the daily update on the cleaning and repair of Isaac E. Young Middle School and New Rochelle High School, both of which were damaged by excessive flooding from what was Hurricane Ida.
Today at Isaac E. Young, crews are finishing classroom repairs. The work includes plastering, taping, and starting painting. By tomorrow, eight of the damaged classrooms will be ready to welcome students on Monday, September 13.
The specialized crews working to remove asbestos completed their work on schedule. Tomorrow, crews will begin finishing the remaining spaces. Custodial crews are hard at work cleaning the completed classrooms. We also have brought in a second crew to expedite the final reconstruction and repair. Also tomorrow, crews will finish the remaining classrooms. Tents, which will enable students to eat meals outside while the cafeteria is being repaired, will be erected. Again, I want to underscore that the school will be fully ready and safe to welcome students back on Monday, September 13. Thank you to all the crews and teams who have made this possible.
At New Rochelle High School, crews continue to “flood cut” damaged walls to remove contaminated sheetrock and insulation, and allow the flood-impacted areas to further dry. Specialized asbestos-abatement crews will start their work early next week. Also, beginning tomorrow, we are removing all furniture from flood-impacted spaces. The furniture will be cleaned, sanitized, and stored while remediation and repair work continue. Not having to continually move an extensive amount of furniture will enable us to complete repairs more quickly. While I do not have any definitive news to share at this time, we continue to explore alternative locations to offer in-person instruction. I understand the importance of having these opportunities for in-person instruction, and more information will be forthcoming.
I want to close by remembering all who lost their lives 20 years ago in the terrorist attacks, and the acts of heroism in the weeks, months, and years that have followed and continue today. Today, I was honored to be a part of the annual September 11 memorial ceremony at Amy’s Greenhouse at the Barnard Early Childhood Center. This living memorial, epitomized by sunflowers, serves as a reminder that educating and preparing children to help make our world a place of lifelong learning, compassion, love, and humanity, is of utmost importance. I am proud to be part of a community that has so much courage, compassion, love, and togetherness.

Les escribo para compartir la actualización diaria sobre la limpieza y reparación de la escuela intermedia Isaac E. Young y la escuela secundaria New Rochelle, las cuales resultaron dañadas por las inundaciones excesivas del huracán Ida.
Hoy en Isaac E. Young, los equipos están terminando las reparaciones de los salones de clases. El trabajo incluye revocar, encintar y comenzar a pintar. Para mañana, ocho de las aulas dañadas estarán listas para recibir a los estudiantes el lunes 13 de septiembre.
Las cuadrillas especializadas que trabajan para eliminar el amianto completaron su trabajo a tiempo. Mañana, las tripulaciones comenzarán a terminar los espacios restantes. Los equipos de conserjes están trabajando arduamente limpiando los salones de clases terminados. También hemos traído un segundo equipo para acelerar la reconstrucción y reparación final. También mañana, los equipos terminarán las aulas restantes. Se levantarán carpas que permitirán a los estudiantes comer afuera mientras se repara la cafetería. Una vez más, quiero subrayar que la escuela estará completamente lista y segura para dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes el lunes 13 de septiembre. En la escuela secundaria New Rochelle, las cuadrillas continúan “cortando por inundación” las paredes dañadas para quitar la placa de yeso contaminada y el aislamiento, y permitir que las áreas afectadas por la inundación se sequen aún más. Los equipos especializados en eliminación de asbesto comenzarán a trabajar a principios de la próxima semana. Además, a partir de mañana, retiraremos todos los muebles de los espacios afectados por las inundaciones. Los muebles se limpiarán, desinfectarán y almacenarán mientras continúan los trabajos de remediación y reparación. No tener que mover continuamente una gran cantidad de muebles nos permitirá completar las reparaciones más rápidamente. Si bien no tengo ninguna noticia definitiva para compartir en este momento, continuamos explorando ubicaciones alternativas para ofrecer instrucción en persona. Entiendo la importancia de tener estas oportunidades de instrucción en persona, y próximamente recibiré más información.
Quiero terminar recordando a todos los que perdieron la vida hace 20 años en los ataques terroristas y los actos de heroísmo en las semanas, meses y años que siguieron y continúan hoy. Hoy, tuve el honor de ser parte de la ceremonia conmemorativa anual del 11 de septiembre en Amy's Greenhouse en el Barnard Early Childhood Center. Este monumento viviente, personificado por los girasoles, sirve como recordatorio de que educar y preparar a los niños para ayudar a hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar de aprendizaje, compasión, amor y humanidad de por vida es de suma importancia.
