During "The Holidays," I'm reflecting on our AAUW community - a community of women, and supporters, coming together to empower women. I’m very grateful for the AAUW leaders who have stepped up to make a difference by being board members – they have kept us active: learning, advocating, and supporting each other over the past year.
I am especially grateful for Program Chair Jackie McGuiness and her insistence on providing near-monthly programming (which I thought would be too much). She's kept us working together regularly across branches and beyond AAUW to other organizations. Jackie organized November’s “Strength of Women Though Networking,” by drawing on her own network of amazing, working women to create an action-oriented discussion of how to become a stronger self-advocate in the workplace. Thanks to Alexandra Avila, for leading off the discussion by sharing her take-aways from NCWSSL 2021, and her recent workplace experiences; and thanks to all the attendees who asked probing questions, shared their experiences and gave various tips for self-promotion and network building. If you missed this program, or want to refresh your memory about the helpful tips that were shared, you can watch the recording on our aauwnj.org website.
At our virtual “unConference” on December 9th we will have a chance to share and celebrate our successes of the past year and get to know each other a little better. Hopefully, we’ll find inspiration and energy to go forward stronger in 2022.
While we will continue to use Zoom meetings to engage our AAUW NJ community in the year ahead, because it is a convenient way to connect those with common interests across the State, we are looking forward to coming together safely-in-person in 2022, as we become a more fully-vaccinated community.
Happy Holidays!

Why Do You Donate to AAUW?
December is the Month of Giving and it revolves around people making a difference in society by helping others. Donating is a major mood-booster. The knowledge that you are helping others is hugely empowering and, in turn, can make you feel happier and more fulfilled. It also strengthens our personal values when we use our resources to help others. AAUW could not continue its vital work without the help of its members, donors and supporters. Your contributions make a concrete difference in the lives of women and girls, and on their behalf, we are deeply grateful.
We are pleased to announce that this year -- in honor of our 140th milestone -- AAUW’s Board of Directors, committee leaders, and some staff have generously made possible the largest gift opportunity in our organization’s history. Because of their generosity, every donation made to AAUW through the end of the year will be DOUBLED, up to $75,000!
Thank you for your past generosity and support of AAUW. If you have strong feelings about helping women achieve their optimum potential, please consider donating to the Greatest Needs Fund of AAUW. It’s so easy to do! Just go to https://ww2.aauw.org/donate-gift-new/

AAUW Statement on the
Build Back Better Act
in Congress
On November 19th, AAUW CEO Gloria L. Blackwell issued this statement on the progress of the Build Back Better Act:
"The American Association of University Women is heartened by the passage of the Build Back Better Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, and we vow to continue working hard to ensure this essential proposal becomes law.
The BBB includes many provisions that AAUW has long been fighting for, including paid family and medical leave, lower child care costs, an extension of the Child Care Tax Credit, universal pre-school for three- and four-year olds, an increase in the maximum Pell Grant and support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to name just a few.
This historic package represents a desperately needed investment in American women and their families that not only will help us recover from the devastation of the pandemic, but will also move us toward a future where women truly have equal opportunity.
We urge the Senate to show its support for women, families – indeed all working Americans – by passing this measure with the same robust policies without delay."

Celebrating 140 years of AAUW
In November, AAUW celebrated its 140th anniversary. During these 140 years, AAUW has evolved to become the leading voice in advancing gender equity in education and workplaces everywhere. Through research, education and advocacy, we’re committed to ensuring that everyone gets the same opportunity to learn, earn and lead. Our programs aim at moving women forward—and we fight for policies that support our goals.
