Coming soon to a trail near you! The Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC)'s 2021 Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Challenge t-shirt is green in many ways. The shirts are made by Recover, a sustainable apparel company, out of a 50/50 cotton poly yarn from recycled plastic bottles and upcycled cotton.
There's still time to order your shirt today! You can register as an individual ($45 - 1 shirt) or family ($75 - 2 shirts) for the Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Challenge. We're encouraging people to walk 45 miles, the length of the Gunpowder Watershed, at their own pace throughout the month of September. Participants that walk 45 miles or raise $250 will be entered into prize raffles.
Please note, we are expecting the shirts to arrive soon after Labor Day. Thanks to our amazing Events Committee volunteers, we will be able to hand deliver your t-shirt in the upcoming weeks! Stay tuned for more information.

New Volunteer Opportunity: GVC Land Preservation Monitors |
|
Did you know that GVC has facilitated the preservation of over 1800 acres within the Gunpowder Watershed? As the land trust holding the easements, we monitor these lands on an annual basis.
This fall we are initiating a new volunteer program to create a team of GVC Land Preservation monitors. Enjoy being outdoors? Want to make a tangible difference in conserving land and wildlife habitat? Our main requirement is that volunteers be able to walk at least a mile on rough and/or wet terrain and attend both of these upcoming sessions:
Wednesday, October 13 (6 pm - 8 pm): GVC Land Preservation Monitoring training at Baltimore County Ag Center, 114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030.
Saturday, November 20 (10 am): GVC Land Preservation Monitoring session in Baltimore County. Location will be shared with participants during training session.
Contact Deborah Slawson, GVC Land Preservation Chair, by email to share your interest in this training. The Land Preservation Committee will then consider all applicants and notify them of their status prior to the October training.

GVC is your local land trust and watershed restoration group. Perhaps you've joined us for a tree planting, picked up our calendar of events at a community event, participated in the Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Challenge or simply recognize the name "Gunpowder" and the iconic bridge on our logo. We're thrilled to offer you a new opportunity to get to know us better this fall through the stories of some members of our community.
We are hosting two Clear Creeks Conversations with the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, events on September 16 and October 14 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. These are free, virtual events; participants will be emailed the event link soon after they sign up.

Show your support for healthy lands, healthy waters, and healthy communities in the Gunpowder watershed! You’re invited to our GVC Celebration at Pine Ridge Golf Course on Sunday, October 3rd from 3 pm – 6 pm. Join us as we celebrate our volunteers and showcase our environmental stewardship projects. Join us for a native plant garden tour and stay for live music, food trucks, golf games, and good conversation!
The GVC Celebration at Pine Ridge Golf Course will include drinks, snacks, and raffles. It is open to the general public as well as GVC volunteers, members, and supporters. Admission is FREE but we are asking guests to RSVP to help us plan accordingly.

Strike a pose! Do a happy dance! It's time to start preparing for our fall tree planting season. GVC will be planting hundreds of native trees this October and November and we need YOUR help to meet our goals. Locations are still being finalized for each date but are generally in northern and eastern Baltimore County, especially around the Loch Raven Reservoir area.
Each tree planting event will be limited to 20 volunteers. Volunteer groups are encouraged to register online. Your point person can either RSVP for the entire group (make sure to add total # volunteers in comments section) or encourage each individual/family to fill out our online registration form. The GVC highly values the safety of our staff and volunteers. All participants are encouraged to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing. Should you feel ill, please do not attend the event and let the event leader know as soon as possible so we can recruit additional volunteers.

What better place to sport your finest crab fashion than the 23rd Annual Treasure the Chesapeake Celebration hosted earlier this month by the Chesapeake Bay Trust?! GVC staff and Board Members, including our new President, enjoyed the opportunity to network with others working hard to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay.

GVC Greening Golf Courses |
Learn about native plants WITHOUT getting your hands dirty! This September, we have two opportunities for you to chat with our landscape designers while viewing newly installed native plant gardens at Pine Ridge Golf Course in Lutherville (2101 Dulaney Valley Road).
Saturday, Sept. 11 (3 - 4:30 pm): Rain Garden
Saturday, Sept. 18 (3 - 4:30 pm): Bayscape
Both workshops are FREE and showcase how Pine Ridge Golf Course has incorporated native plants and Bay-Wise practices into their landscaping. Learn how native plants can beautify your property while also improving the health of our local creeks, streams, and the Chesapeake Bay.
