Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

November 2020

kelley pic.jpg

What am I thankful for this November?

I am thankful for all of you: all of the dedicated physicians, trainees and frontline providers of care for the children and families in our community. I am thankful for the tremendous involvement in our community on behalf of children’s health. Children and families are impacted right now on many levels. Pre-pandemic 1 in 5 children were raised in poverty and now those unfortunate statistics are rising. Families are stressed in a prolonged way. We know this impacts health. Food insecurity is one of the major issues. To that end I am making a personal donation in your honor to the Alameda County Food Bank.

What’s your current level of Fauci?

I am shamelessly and with levity reprinting (care of Bob Wachter, Chair of Medicine) this important survey tool:

I am on a 3.6 during this election week. A bit about me, I grew up in Oakland and Berkeley in a political household committed to civil rights and indoctrinated in the importance of civics. When I went off to a small liberal arts college, I heard a visiting lecture by Cornel West. One of his famous quotes resonates with me today:

“Justice is what love looks like in public” - Cornel R. West

So proud of Steph Fong Gomez, third year pediatric resident and her commitment to getting out the vote for kids via the VOICE project. She is sporting a t-shirt that says “VOTE WITH LOVE.” Thanks for voting with love and empathy for the kids. As you care for others during these uncertain times, take good care for yourself. For more resources check out this website https://chonet.ucsf.edu/emotional-health-wellbeing-resources.

Let’s all have a quiet, safe and happy Thanksgiving!

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

RESOURCES

New School of Medicine Mobile App

Greetings School of Medicine Community,

As we adjust to new working environments with many new challenges and opportunities, we are excited to announce the launch of a new mobile app, providing an interactive portal connecting you to your colleagues, resources, and opportunities within the School of Medicine (SOM) and across campus.

Our person-to-person interactions have been limited by shelter-in-place and event restrictions, but our goal with this new app is to:

  •  Provide an overview of the resources and opportunities available to the SOM community;
  •  Allow the Dean’s Office communications team to send targeted, just-in-time push notifications about programs and opportunities; and
  • Offer an opportunity for the SOM community to share their perspectives about working at UCSF.

Below please find three easy steps to download the app. We encourage you to:

  • Check out the "Our People" section where you can opt-in to receive real-time SOM updates, see the latest staff spotlights, recognize a colleague, and access SOM and campus-wide programs and resources;
  • Learn more about each of our mission areas and read the latest SOM news;
  • View videos from Dean King and other SOM leaders; and
  • Connect with the Dean's Office Management Unit.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to our values, our mission, and to each other. We look forward to engaging with you on this new platform!

Sincerely,

Lesley Snyder

CRC Training Course: Clinical Research During COVID-19

From the UCSF Office of Research

*This message is sent on behalf of Associate Vice Chancellor of Clinical Research Harold Collard.*

Dear All,

We are reaching out to supervisors and managers of clinical research coordinators (CRCs) to let you know of a new online training course, Clinical Research During COVID-19, that the Office of Research is strongly encouraging all CRCs to complete before the end of November.

The brief course is hosted on the UC Learning platform and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Instructions for how to access the course are below.

The course is designed to support the safe conduct of clinical research by 1) reviewing fundamental information about COVID-19 and institutional policies governing the restart of onsite clinical research, 2) outlining COVID-related responsibilities of study teams, and 3) providing an aggregate list of institutional resources as a useful reference tool.

We are asking for your support by communicating the importance of fulfilling this recommended training to your CRCs. Notification of the course and request to complete it will also be sent via the CRC listserv. While the end of November deadline only applies to CRCs, we are also highly encouraging other study team members to complete this training to reinforce UCSF's institutional research policies during the pandemic.

Please do not hesitate to reach out directly to Lisa Schoonerman with your questions, concerns, or suggestions for improvement.

How to Access Clinical Research During COVID-19

  1. Go to the UC Learning Center (can also be reached through MyAccess)
  2. Login to the site
  3. Click the “Find A Course” box on the homepage
  4. Search for “Clinical Research During COVID-19”

Thank you,

Hal
