FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

I had so many plans for this week’s Quick Bytes and when it comes right down to it: this is a week of Self-Care for me.

Part of being a human is knowing and bowing down to the times where we need to regroup. Lessons have taught me over my 63 years of wonderful learning: I need to listen to what my body tells me, do you?

Last month we went through our many meetings that create a CFWC Executive Board Meeting, followed closely this month with the CALL to Convention. Different Teams worked hard to bring my vision into being for both, hours of planning and hours of refinement. I want to thank every single person that helped to put these two culminating successes together and saw through to the finished product. It does indeed take a Village and I am grateful every moment for my Federation Team Village.

This week, I need to rest, and I shall rest.

The CALL to Convention is out. Distributed electronically over a four-day period to Club Presidents and current Members of the CFWC Executive Board. There is wonderful information in the CALL, if you did not get a copy of your own yet it is on this Quick Byte and it is available on our website at CFWC.ORG.

Read it, print it if you like, but do join us for Convention in May. Ask your Club about becoming a Delegate, run for one of the two committees we are seeking members for, or just come to enjoy the camaraderie of friendship and celebrate Federation.

I have visited Amazon and purchased my head pieces for the various meetings, I hope you have as much fun as I did; think of the many ways to incorporate the daily themes into something that would reflect even on screen!

I will make my bed today, I will get dressed, but after that: maybe a tv mystery, a crossword puzzle, and a nap before chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and peas (with pearl onions) for dinner. I love to cook and that will help me relax and partake of self-care for myself today!

Luv, Pam

FINANCIAL FACTS from our CFWC Finance Committee
Did you know?
#1 If your club is under the CFWC umbrella you still have to file your own club and district taxes.
Jane Thomey, Environment Chair

Food Waste is the Gorilla in the Room. Such is a warning about the organic waste crisis. What is the problem? In the U. S. alone nearly one-third of the food we produce reaches landfills, accounting for 21.6 per cent of all discarded items. Most of that food rots and releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25x more harmful than carbon dioxide. It is a worldwide problem. On World Recycling Day, March 18, we can reflect on the efforts of the many countries that are mobilizing to manage and reverse the effects.
California identified several ways to reduce the effect on our landfills in the 2006 California Global Warming Solutions Act.  It has created laws mandating businesses to reduce the source of wastes and called for increased production of compost and mulch.
We also have a responsibility to reduce, reuse and recycle organic waste. It includes being thoughtful about your food purchases. Plan your meals in advance and buy only what you will use. Use everything you buy!
Even so we will have waste. If you are inclined, composting is recommended. Some of our clubs have ongoing composting projects and one Is even offering worms for adoption so you can start your own. This is not for everyone, however. You may be able to put additional organic wastes in your green bin besides grass and clippings. Call your local sanitation department to determine what is permitted. If you have a bumper crop of fruits and vegetables, think Food Banks. AmpleHarvest.org will be able to direct you to a nearby food bank accepting homegrown produce.
The solution to eliminating waste starts with each one of us.

CFWC Health and Wellness Program
Myrna Binford, Chair
                                                                            .
This week I am moving off this CSP program into an Affiliate Organization program that GFWC is partnered with through the UN Foundation, specifically Shot@Life. This program is tied to the Health and Wellness program just by its name. I got involved with this program several years ago at a CFWC Convention and then had it as my District President’s project. Last month I finally “attended” the Shot@Life’s Champions Summit. There were a few club ladies there from CA, but also other states. It was a terrific two days and the speakers were some of the best I have heard. Usually the summit is in Washington, D.C., but due to Covid-19, it was held virtually (but, that’s ok because we had more speakers since we didn’t get to walk around to the Congressional offices. We did get to visit them virtually).
I am sure most of you are aware of this program, but just in case, here is an overview:
·       Polio, measles, pneumococcal, and rotavirus are the childhood vaccines that are administered.
·       Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease.

Operation Gratitude has announced its 2nd annual Vietnam Veterans Paracord Bracelet Challenge to specifically honor the 850,000 Vietnam Veterans in the U.S. Operation Gratitude includes a bracelet in each Care Package. The dates of this year’s Challenge are March 16-30; however, these bracelets are needed all year long. Check out the FAQ on the Operation Gratitude website and click on Paracord Program. The bracelet gets its name from parachute cord and can hold up to 550 pounds of weight. A bracelet provides 7.5 feet of cord which can be used as: sewing thread to repair gear, secure camouflage nets to objects, build a makeshift shelter, or make a sling or splint, and more. The cord can save a life in an emergency. Kits of cord can be purchased for $10 plus $6.80 shipping if you prefer, or you can prep your own cord.   Instructions are not included in the kit but are detailed in a 7 minute video accessed from the site. A direct link is www.operationgratitude.com/express-your-thanks/paracord-bracelets where you’ll find a step-by-step tutorial for left-handed and right-handed volunteers.
Leadership Minute
Have you thought about being your club President? Every Club member should at least think about it. If you say yea, I thought about it & I can’t write an agenda, or I am scared to be in front of all those people, or what ever it is you are scared of. Remember this, you can learn to do these things. As President or First Vice President this is the friendliest group you will ever being standing in front of. Most of these ladies want you to do good & be a winner. Yea, there may be one or two who don’t but remember this too. They DO NOT Matter one bit. The ones that matter are the ones who want to succeed.
What is the main thing you need to do, practice! How can you practice by being a committee chair or a chairman of a program at the District? How do you get to do those things? By walking up to the Club President or District President & saying what can I do to help you? can I be a chairman? What is the most important thing you need help with right now? What is one of the things I keep telling you all to do? To say YES when asked but also you need to ask what you can do. If your club is larger, it may be the only way you get a job. So, think about that. Love to all of you!
Always
Dori

Editor's Note: ATTN: CFWC Officers and Chairmen - As you've noticed, the Communications Committee is in the process of combining into one location all news from all officers, chairmen, district and clubs and any additional information to be sent out to our members by the various publications This will certainly be a valuable resource for all of our editors/managers to collect information from our membership.

Your lowly QuickBytes editor is eager to work within this procedure but has a request and you have a choice. For the history of QB, the cfwc1@hotmail address has been dedicated to only correspondence regarding QB and this has simplified your editor's life when compiling each weekly issue by limiting the places to search for your articles. While hoping to work within the new system however, and to perhaps make the transition easier, It's time for your choice - you may continue to submit articles to QB via the cfwc1@hotmail address until the end of this administration OR you may use the new address if you like, but we request the use of "QUICKBYTES" in the subject line. It will certainly be easier for your editor to review a multitude of emails at the new address not pertaining directly to QB

REMINDER the deadline for the submission of QB articles is end of business on the Thursday prior to the Monday where the article is to appear. As stated before, this allows your editor time to check with you if there is a question (such as failure to include an attachment, etc) and still allow her to finish and schedule the issue to arrive in our subscribers inboxes early Monday morning. Many Thanks for understanding!!

PS HI SUBSCRIBERS!! If you have a question about a subscription, a reply regarding a specific article or any comment - PLEASE USE THE cfwc1@hotmail.com.
