THE HUB DIRECTOR'S CORNER
On My Mind and From the Heart
The HUB runs a very busy Neighbors Helping Neighbors program that helps local seniors and people with disabilities stay independent in their homes. The range of requests that we get vary greatly and we try our hardest to find a way to help our neighbors. Many of calls we answer are from people that are living in substandard housing. Too often we see people that have leaking pipes, mold, floors rotting out, and roofs that are leaking water into their homes. This isn’t the way we want grandmothers, grandfathers, sisters, uncles, neighbors or really any human to live.

Alice, is a senior that The HUB is currently working with that has had water pouring into her bedroom for over 2 years. She has dealt with the situation the best she could with tarps and bandaid fixes. Her small social security checks do not leave enough money for food and medications much less home repairs. Alice dreads the rainy season and is not sure how much longer she can manage this situation before the walls rot away and she is forced into homelessness. She is facing a crisis that is a health issue and erodes her security and peace of mind every day.

Alice called The HUB to see if we could help. One of the things that breaks my heart is when we have to hand someone a tarp, and offer to help get it on their roof knowing full well that it does not solve the problem. So we always strive to get a better solution while we managing the symptoms of the problem at hand. The HUB advocated on Alice’s behalf to obtain the majority of funding through the USDA 504 Home Repair Program Click here for more information. This program helps low income people afford home repairs through either a grant or a low interest loan.

The process is a lengthy one and the paperwork is daunting to say the least, but Alice was determined and jumped through every hoop set before her. So when she found out that yes she was funded for roof repairs but no there was a gap between the amount covered and what was needed she was filled with despair. Alice was filled with the look of defeat as she shared the amount that was still needed. This is a small fortune to her and she was devastated that she was so close and yet so far away. Sadness filled her face as she envisions spending another rainy season in her leaking home.

I shared hope with Alice and told her that the community that she lives in supports and loves seniors. I have seen this community come through time and time again to change the life of a person in need. This is another opportunity to share hope through a financial donation to The HUB. Click here to help a senior in need. Help Alice stay dry and secure this winter by making a gift today.
