November Health Spotlight:
Prostate Cancer Awareness
The CDC supports a shared decision-making process when health care providers discuss prostate screening with men ages 55-69 years. Routine screenings are not recommended for men aged 70 and older. Having a family history of prostate cancer is considered a high risk. African American men are: more likely to get prostate cancer, more likely to die from prostate cancer and they get prostate cancer at a younger age (tending to have a more severe type). The standard screening test is the PSA, a blood test that measures the prostate specific antigen. Men should discuss the risk and benefits of screening with a health care provider when deciding to test.

In with the Positive Out with the Negative
What are you filling your brain with? Gratitude is a magnetic force to attract others. As a relationship component, gratitude can build trust and enhance empathy. Practicing gratitude acts like a weed mat to block out negative thoughts as well as improve our psychological and physical well-being. Studies have shown reduced blood pressure, decreased aches and pains and conversely an increase in restorative sleep and strengthened immunity for those who cultivate gratitude. Exercise gratitude by establishing a habit. Consider journaling three items of gratitude daily. Gratitude is a brain muscle and needs to be worked. So tell me what are you grateful for?
Sleep Well or Sleepless?
This is just a short reminder that November signals a rush to finish harvest season in many areas. That brings with it long days and short nights with minimal sleep and rest.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center conducted a study that tracked the sleeping patterns of farmers and how lack of sleep affected balance. That study found farmers who sleep fewer than 7.5 hours per night increase their risk for injuries by 61%.Nutrition and restorative sleep are key factors in the ability to stay alert and attentive to risks for injury.
