Dear Members,
These are hellish times. I don't know what to think anymore. I have so many feelings these days, and I have to say, most of them are of the negative/hopeless variety. And then I'll read about a single act of kindness, or hear from a friend, or I'll take a walk and see the miracles of Spring and early Summer.
I don't want to minimize anything that's going on the world today. But remember it's important to take care of yourself, stay strong, grounded, grateful, and be kind and cheerful to those around you. Try to do something creative each day. And remember to vote this Fall!
Stay safe and healthy,
Donna Catanzaro

20th Century Women Artists - Interviews
There is a series of audio interviews available at getty.edu/recordingartists. They are very interesting because they are interviews with the artists themselves. There are also two contemporary artists who respond to each of the recordings in order to put things into a contemporary mindset but the interviews themselves allow the artists to be heard in their own voices.
The artists include Alice Neel, Betye Saar, Lee Krasner, Yoko Ono, Eva Hesse and Helen Frankenthaler.
You might want to give yourself a quiet time to hear what they have to say.
The Eva Hesse interview is purported to be the only interview in her own voice in existence and whether she is a favorite artist or one you haven't really connected with the interview is well worth the time to hear.
I always trust what the artist has to say. I find this to be particularly true with women artists as they so rarely have the "universal experience" accorded most artists. By universal I actually mean the male experience of being an artist as that filled the expectations of what artists were in this timeframe. Women have a different reality whether just in the demands of everyday life or in the paths open to them as artists. Things have changed since the times when these women, for the most part, were active but they haven't changed as much as we would like to think.
Listen to Alice Neel talk about her life and when she finishes think about your response to her story. Would it be different if she were a male artist? I'm guessing it would be. Our expectations, even as women, are different for men and women and those expectations color how we view artists, as well as everyone else.

Emma Amos, Painter Who Challenged Racism and Sexism, Dies at 83.
Emma Amos, Who
received the WCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 lived in Bedford NH. She was 83.
The fact that Ms. Amos's art complicates, rather than narrows, notions of identity, racial and otherwise, makes it pertinent to the present moment, when binary thinking of all kinds is under scrutiny. At the same time, her careerlong belief in art as a form of ethical resistance carries new weight when the promises of the civil rights era seem again under threat.
"It's always been my contention," she once said, "that for me, a black woman artist, to walk into the studio is a political act."

Call for Art
Narratives: A Woman's Point of View,
Every picture tells a story and every point of view has a particular attitude or way of considering a matter. "Narratives: A Woman's Point of View" is a juried exhibition to be held August 1 through August 29 at VynnArt Gallery in Meredith, NH. It will be open to all works of 2D and 3D art in all mediums. A
narrative
is the choice of how to tell a story, what details to share and in what order to relate them. It is a representation or specific manifestation of the
story
, rather than the
story
itself. A
narrative
turns
stories
into information and knowledge for the recipient. In this show, we will highlight "Narratives" from a women's point of view through art.
The VynnArt Gallery in Meredith
WILL BE OPEN. We are currently discussing plans for a "safe" Drop Off and a "safe" Opening. We will let you know more about that in the July ArtGenda.

Our New Exhibition Chair Starting 2021
Judy Krassowski
I'm the teaching artist at Trinity High School in Manchester NH and have been working evening/weekend box office at Red River Theatres in Concord, anxiously planning for guidelines for when we can welcome our guests back for fantastic indie films!
I've been eclectic in my own artwork, focusing a lot on digital photography and illustration lately, but I've been most recently challenged to just do me as I have my fingers in a lot of pots (comes from being a teacher, I guess). That's always been my intent, and when I can, time disappears and I am fairly happy. I like arts administrative work as well as it seems to help a lot of folks get their own work moving forward, and I've always seemed to be pretty good at facilitating events and such. If I can be of any help with the WCA of NH, I'd like to. I thoroughly enjoy driving and given a little notice can be flexible with my schedule. Just tell me what you need, and let's go from there. :)
Thank you very much for including me and I am looking very forward to working with you all!
