Lenten meditation for March 16, 2021
Today would have been my grandmother’s birthday, she was born 126 years ago. She inspired me with hope; she was loving and compassionate and had a deep faith. Her faith encouraged me in my own faith journey as I grew up.

My grandmother lived with us from the time her husband died. In later years I learned she had discovered he had been having an affair with her best friend, but she did not crumble. I think of her and find strength, and I also find faith from the lives of all those I read about each day in “Holy Women Holy Men.”

Additionally, I find hope in nature.
Due to the warmer weather this week I have been outside, and I have seen the early bulbs, the daffodils, and crocuses, pushing up through the earth. Only last week they were still covered with a thick layer of snow.

Many of us have received the covid-19 vaccinations and feel a little safer and can hope we can be in company with others less fearfully. This too, fills me with hope.

As we journey through Lent, we are reminded of Jesus journeying to the cross. He was the hope made flesh for the world. On Sunday we heard that “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” This is ultimately where we find hope.
