Jenn grew up in British Columbia, Canada, as an active member of the local Pony Club. She attributes the Pony Club for developing her love and desire to work with horses. She has been a successful professional equestrian coach and trainer for the past 10 years working in a competitive show barn. Part of her duties included medical care for the horses. After working closely with Dr. Sarah Pedersen treating and rehabilitating her personal performance horse, as well as many client horses, Jenn decided to make a career change and focused on veterinary rehabilitation. Jenn graduated from the Animal Health Technology program at Olds College and passed the VTNE this spring. She works at both an equine rehabilitation practice and a busy small animal general practice. She is thrilled to be able to attend the Healing Oasis Conference and is humbled and honored to be selected for this award.

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Technicians: Enter Our New Contest for National Vet Tech Week!
|
|
by Sandy Gregory, M. Ed, RVT, VTS (Physical Rehabilitation), CCRA
AARV Technician Liaison
The most rewarding jobs are those which significantly help to improve pets and people’s lives, or contribute to a bigger cause. That is what we do as veterinary technicians. Physical rehabilitation is at the top of the list for receiving a huge sense of satisfaction and allows us to make a real difference in the world.
|
|
AARV would like to reward you for what you do. Tell us about an inspiring geriatric patient and how you have made a difference in their life. In a minimum of 300 words tell us:
- What makes this pet so special compared to others?
- How old are they and what conditions do they have?
- In what way are you changed because of them?
- What is the best part of the session for you and your patient?
To enter, email your answers to these questions with a picture of this special patient to technician@rehabvets.org. This contest is open to all veterinary technicians who are members of AARV.
The deadline is October 17th during National Vet Tech Week.
|
|
Dolce is one of my most inspiring and favorite geriatric patients at the age of 12 years old.
|
|
The PRIZE for the best story is $250 towards the CE of your choice AND one year FREE membership to AARV.
Thank you for all that you do to contribute to preserving animal health and well-being. Happy National Vet Tech Week!

Calling all veterinary students! Are you interested in winning a trip to the 2022 IVAPM conference in Denver, Colorado, April 3-5, 2022?
We are excited to announce the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV) has again partnered with Royal Canin to offer an outstanding opportunity for veterinary students with an interest in physical rehabilitation. To be considered, a case report pertaining to physical rehabilitation MUST be submitted by December 1st, 2021, 11:59 pm EST. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. All case reports will be reviewed and the student whose case report is selected will win a trip to the 2022 IVAPM conference (travel reimbursement awarded up to $1,500). The selected student will present their case report as a 15-minute podium presentation during the AARV lecture track.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Focus on State Practice Acts: Nebraska
by Theresa Pancotto, DVM, MS, MS, DACVIM(N), CCRP
Legislative Liaison
|
|
I'm going through each state at random and providing an interpretation of the acts to better guide individuals in managing physical rehabilitation as it pertains to their practice and state.
Interpretation
Nebraska is unique in that they have a specified practice act for health care workers trained in animal care (Uniform Credentialing Act) that is not considered veterinary medicine and surgery. These individuals must be licensed/certified, have animal-specific training, and work under immediate supervision of a veterinarian. These allied health members should use the term Licensed Animal Therapist. Practices included in the uniform credentialing act include: acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy (among others).
A veterinarian practicing physical therapy should use the term “physical rehabilitation” since the Nebraska physical therapy act utilizes “physical therapy” and “physiotherapy.”

AARV Now Has 943 Articles of Interest in Its Database!
|
|
AARV's searchable Articles of Interest Database has expanded to include 943 articles! The database now includes Articles of Interest for all of 2016 through June 2021 and is available to AARV members in the Members area of its website.
AARV will keep adding journal articles to the database each month to develop its usefulness as a research tool. We also will continue to include links to our past Articles of Interest from 2010 to the present in PDF format. All Articles of Interest have been selected by AARV founder Dr. Julia Tomlinson because of their relevance to the field of veterinary rehabilitation.
To search the database, log in to the Members Area of the website and go to the Articles of Interest Database page. Enter a keyword, author's name, or other search term to begin your search. A list of matching article abstracts will be displayed. A link to the full version of the journal article will be provided if available.
Our thanks to Dr. Julia Tomlinson for selecting relevant journal articles each month and Dr. Kelli Martin for preparing the articles for the database.
