Welcome from a Current Student

Congratulations on your admission to the University of Michigan School of Public Health! You should be so incredibly proud of yourself for making it this far – you have accomplished so much and have so many great things ahead of you (:

It wasn’t that long ago that I was in your shoes, and I remember the crazy mix of emotions, most notably excitement and nervousness. As I reflect back on these past two years of graduate school, I wanted to share two pieces of advice that I wish I had (or that I had received and wish I had taken more seriously).

Graduate school is hard; don’t be afraid to ask for help. For many of you, your undergraduate experience may have been easy (or at least not too difficult) and maybe you never needed to go to office hours or work on homework with friends. Remember, graduate school brings together top students from across the globe from a variety of different backgrounds, and you have been chosen because you are one of the best. Don’t feel like a failure if you need to ask for help and use your resources to your advantage! I’ve always found that faculty, staff, GSIs, and classmates at Michigan Public Health are quick to help if you ask for it. There’s also so many great resources available through the Careers Office, like our new Student Success Coach.

Self care is important; make sure to prioritize your health and wellbeing. My graduate school journey has been filled with many great days, but also some difficult ones. Make sure to find a solid group of people that you can rely on, and take time to practice self care, however that looks for you. Michigan is home to some amazing people, and I promise you will make lifelong friends (and a strong network!).

I wish you the best of luck on this next step of your academic and professional journey. And welcome to the Michigan family – Go Blue!

Best,

Hanna Venera

Michigan Public Health has a schoolwide student-to-alumni mentoring program to help grow connections across our community. This year’s mentoring programs brought together around 700 students and alumni. Sarah Gharib, who recently completed an MS in Environmental Health Sciences, and her mentor, Dennis Hussey, MPH ’76, found their mentoring relationship to be extremely valuable.

Student Experience

Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST)

Students at Michigan Public Health have many opportunities to get involved in communities and build up their public health skills in real world settings. One of those opportunities is to become involved in PHAST: the Public Health Action Support Team. Established in 2005, PHAST deploys Michigan Public Health graduate students to health organizations and non-profit organizations throughout Michigan, nationally, and globally to assist with various public health projects.

Using a surge capacity and service learning model, students deploy for practical experiential learning opportunities that ground and enhance classroom learning while addressing emerging public health challenges. PHAST also offers a suite of community service, workshop, speaker, and training opportunities. These opportunities provide fertile training ground for our students to develop their skills as thoughtful listeners, partners, and practitioners.
