March 2023

Liebe TCGIS Alumni Students and Families,

In December TCGIS alumni met at Como Park Pavilion to catch up and meet other alumni over hot cocoa and cookies! It was great to see familiar (and new) faces. Pictured are some of our attendees.

There are many exciting events for our TCGIS community this spring: an art exhibition, a used (German) book fair, and our PTO's Maskenball & Auction. We would love to have our alumni students and parents attend. Read more about these events and other opportunities below!

TCGIS Community Events

Lest We Forget exhibit at TCGIS

During the month of March, TCGIS will host a special exhibit in honor (somewhat early) of Holocaust Remembrance Day. The exhibit, Lest We Forget: A Visual Memoir, focuses on the life of Manfred “Fred” Amram, one of the Minnesota Holocaust survivors featured in last year’s Transfer of Memory exhibit. To the right is a picture of him at that exhibit interacting with TCGIS students.

We had looked forward to having Fred in our midst again this year, but we are very sorry to share that he passed away on February 12. He would have turned 90 later this year, and with his passing, the world has lost a warm and witty soul, a great storyteller, and a keeper of important memories. TCGIS will host Fred’s wife Sandra at a special event on Thursday, March 16, at 6:30 pm. It will be an opportunity to honor Fred’s life and the lives of those who perished in the Holocaust, as well as to learn more about Fred and Sandra’s artistic collaboration. We warmly invite you to mark your calendar for that event.

Maskenball & Auction

Save the Date and book the sitter! Our TCGIS PTO is proud to put on Maskenball - with this year's theme being Hollywood! We can't wait to see how creative you get. Go glam, old school, red carpet, Hollywood punk - whatever you come up with will be amazing! Please note this event is for *adults only*. Buy tickets here.

Would you like to donate to the Auction that takes place during Maskenball? Please check out the following links and let us know if you have any questions. You can email the Auction team at auctiontcgispto@gmail.com. Auction Great Stuff here. Auction Great Gatherings here.

The funds we raise from this and last year's Maskenball will update and reinvigorate our TCGIS playground.

Used German Book Fair

There are over 8,000 German titles in the TCGIS Bücherei (library)! The TCGIS library program has evolved and grown over the past few years, adding new activities such as the middle school extracurricular Library Club, a Lesemarathon (read-a-thon), a bookmark art contest, virtual visits with

German authors or illustrators, and fun events for middle school students (last fall students designed an escape room game for their peers), to name just a few! The library is also open one day

a week during the summer for TCGIS student check-outs.

Our library will be holding a two-day Used Book Fair from 3-5 P.M. on Wednesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 20th. It is open to the public and will take place in the school atrium. Expect to find German books of all levels - from board books and first readers to novels and “vintage” books. There will also be books in the English language, as well! All items are sold on a donation basis, and credit card or cash is accepted. The funds raised benefit the TCGIS

library.

Do you have books (in English or German) that you would like to donate to the fair? The school will be accepting donations starting the month of March. Donated materials must be free of mold, tears, or other damage. All donations must first be approved by the school library coordinator via email

before drop-off: mzimmerman@tcgis.org.

Alumni Opportunities

Studieren in Bayern: Scholarship Opportunity

An exciting scholarship opportunity is open to TCGIS alumni who are interested in studying at a University in Bayern next school year! See this link for more information.

Summer Camp Counselor Position

Looking for a summer job? Look no further! TCGIS is accepting applications for Camp Counselor (CC) positions.

Camps will be offered to TCGIS students from June 26 - August 11, 2023, and will be open to students in Kindergarten - 6th Grade. Each camp lasts one week (Monday-Friday) and meets daily from 9:00am-12:00pm, with before and after care offered. Camps are centered around fun, highly-interactive themes. Counselors and children speak, hear, sing, and create in German while exploring subjects ranging from history and art to science and music.

Sommercamp CC shifts are Monday-Friday:

  • 8:00am - 12:30pm, or
  • 8:00am - 4:30pm, or
  • 12:30pm - 5:00pm or
  • 8:30am - 5:00pm

CCs must be available to work for an entire week at a time, but do not have to work every week of the summer program in order to be eligible (although that is preferred). More information including how to apply can be found here.

Kinderclub: A great job for TCGIS alumni!

Kinderclub, our before and after-school childcare program, is hiring! We love when our TCGIS alumni return to work at our school, and Kinderclub is a great opportunity due to its schedule flexibility, the chance to interact and help out with TCGIS students, and the opportunity to practice your German!

Please reach out Michaela Bromenschenkel if you are interested. A job description can be found here.

Garden of Gratitude: Spring Fundraising Campaign

Our Spring Fundraising Campaign is fast approaching! Last April and May our community raised $25,000. Community members were able to honor a TCGIS student, staff member or community member by “planting” a flower in our Garden of Gratitude. Tribute gifts of all sizes were recognized on a paper flower displayed on our cafeteria windows. More information for this year's Garden of Gratitude coming soon!
