Message from the Director of Research and Innovation
Welcome to our second issue of the DFM's Research newsletter, INNOVATION. This biannual e-newsletter facilitates the sharing of research and innovative academic projects by our faculty and trainees. In this issue, you will see highlights, stories and articles of interest by our scientists, clinician scientists, teachers and residents. We have many active scholars in our Department doing cutting-edge research and innovation in health services research, medical education research, educational innovations, quality improvement, and more. This year we launched a New DFM Innovator Awards program and have already funded five DFM faculty. We will have a second call for this program on October 15, 2020. For more information, please contact either Sylvie Forgues-Martel or myself at darchiba@uottawa.ca.

Implementing a New, Smart Preventive Care Clinical Decision Aid
By: Dr. Scott Laing, PGY3 Clinician Scholar Program
"Today many physicians are using electronic medical records (EMRs) in their practices. Although EMRs promise improved clinic efficiency by simplifying and automating tasks, many physicians are spending more time interacting with their computers than with their patients (...) This project assesses a preventive care clinical decision aid that is integrated with the EMR."

Innovations in MedEd
The DFM has started an exciting journey of innovation! Our new webpage on Innovations in MedEd outlines the details and composition of the three scrum teams who are working towards delivering new learning methods. We have pulled together brilliant and resourceful students from the medical school and engineering department to look at creating educational computer games to teach the enthralling topics of quality improvement and data mining. In the coming months we will be exploring opportunities to use natural language processing and artificial intelligence to drive outcomes and faster responses to clinical dilemmas using existing datasets.
If you would like to get involved, please reach out to Jeff Puncher as we are always welcoming new team members with new perspectives and great ideas!

Family Medicine Grand Rounds
We're happy to launch the new Family Medicine Grand Rounds (FMGR) in September (previously known as Research Grand Rounds). We've redesigned the FMGR to provide an online forum to share and discuss scholarly, clinical teaching, quality improvement and research activities as well as practical work pertaining to family medicine. The sessions will run completely online (via Zoom) from 8:00 am to 9:00 am every fourth Thursday of the month (except December, July and August). The sessions will bring together family medicine professionals, researchers, academics and individuals working within a family medicine environment to discuss topics of importance to family medicine and primary health care broadly.
Faculty members, staff, residents, medical students, including researchers, clinician investigators, community physicians and learners from other medical and allied health specialties are more than welcome to attend.
Save the date! The inaugural Family Medicine Grand Rounds series will take place on September 24 from 8:00am to 9:00am. The recipients of the 2020 DFM Innovator Award will be leading this session (Dr. Kheira Jolin-Dahel, Dr. Courtney Maskerine, Dr. Daniel Myran, Dr. Parisa Rezaiefar and Dr. Jatinderpreet Singh).

Survey: Clinical Threshold for a Patient to have a Reasonably Foreseeable Natural Death for the Purposes of Eligibility for MAiD
Our former DFM resident, Dr. Kim Colangelo, invites all healthcare professionals to participate in a 5-minute anonymous survey that is part of her research study to determine the clinical threshold for a patient to have a reasonably foreseeable natural death for the purposes of eligibility for MAiD. Your participation will help explore patients' access to MAiD and potentially lead to a standardization of eligibility.
The purpose of the research is to inform clinicians who will make determinations about eligibility for a patient to receive MAiD, specifically whether or not the patient’s medical situation would make their natural death be reasonably foreseeable. The research study is conducted by Dr. Kim Colangelo, Sarah Baillie (MA), and Dr. Caleb Zelenietz (approved by the University of Manitoba Health Research Ethics Board). If you have any questions or concerns about this study, do not hesitate to contact the Primary Investigator, Dr. Kim Colangelo.

Unlocking the potential of EMR data with OPEN: supporting physicians to use their own patient data to enhance care
The Ottawa Practice Enhancement Network (OPEN) is a DFM-led quality improvement research study that helps Ottawa-area family doctors make evidence-based decisions to achieve their goals in patient care through customized analyses of electronic medical record (EMR) data. With every patient interaction recorded in their EMR systems, physicians are continuously updating and expanding their own real-time datasets.
For many physicians, the time and effort required to organize and interpret this data is overwhelming, particularly when faced with the uncertainties and challenges of a pandemic. The experts at OPEN support physicians to utilize their own patient data to identify priorities and gaps in their practice and select evidence-based approaches to address them.
|
|
OPEN is currently seeking practices working under different models, including family health groups, family health organizations, family health teams, and community health centers. Contact Maddie Venables to determine eligibility and answer any questions.

Join a national initiative to advance elderly care and deprescribing
According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, a third of Canadian seniors regularly take over five medications, and more than one in four have been prescribed over ten unique medications in the past year. Join forces with the Ottawa Practice Enhancement Network (OPEN) and other primary care networks across Canada to participate in a research and quality improvement collaboration called SPIDER (a Structured Process Informed by Data, Evidence and Research) to support practices’ efforts to advance care for complex elderly patients.
|
|
Reducing potentially inappropriate medications by managing polypharmacy aims to improve patient health and the healthcare experience while providing options for seniors beyond long-term care homes, an important and emerging issue during the pandemic. Contact OPEN’s Regional Coordinator, Maddie Venables to participate.

Dr. Doug Archibald joined the Department of Family Medicine as a healthcare education researcher in 2011 after completing a PhD in Education at the University of Ottawa. Since March 2018, he is our current Director of Research and Innovation and oversees the general functioning and direction of the CT Lamont Primary Health Care Research Centre (CTLC), which includes growing research partnerships within the university and with other institutions, thereby ensuring that our research centre remains a leader in the field. He holds cross appointments with the Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME) and the Faculty of Education. He currently supervises four PhD students and teaches in the Faculty of Education and DIME’s Health Education Scholars Program.
As an education researcher he has secured over $1.5 million dollars in funding, including over $400,000 as a Principal Investigator; most notably receiving a very competitive international medical education grant from the US National Board of Medical Examiners, Edward J. Stemmler Medical Education Fund in 2017. He has published 62 papers in peer reviewed journals and authored 5 books chapters.
He credits much of his research success to working with many of our Department’s faculty and residents. His research interests generally centre around two healthcare education areas: educational technologies and program evaluation.
