Bainbridge to Prisons

Guest speaker:

Mr. Roger BelAir

Pickleball is a combination of tennis and Ping-Pong and it is played on a badminton court that originated on Bainbridge Island. It was the fastest growing sport in the country before the pandemic.

Because of Roger’s effort, pickleball is gaining a huge following in our country’s prisons. He has visited correction facilities from Rikers Island in New York to the largest prison in California with many stops between.

Pickleball can teach life skills such as learning from mistakes, thinking about consequences and becoming a better teammate.

Roger BelAir is a pickleball evangelist and a retired banker. He will teach a pickleball clinic following the meeting at 1:30PM at the Battle Point Park pickleball courts. Please wear your tennis shoes!

Q: What is the Foundation Committee all about?

A: The Rotary Foundation is a registered tax-deductible charity (501c3) that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs.

It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and Friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

Fifty percent of the money we donate to the Foundation, comes back to our District to be awarded as grants.

Our committee is chaired by me, Joanne Croghan, and Charlie Averill. We are available to answer your questions about the Foundation and help direct Rotarians to the giving level they desire and how they chose to give.

Contributions of ANY amount are always welcome. Our goal is 100% participation from our club.

Summer Rosé

Summer is still here as the temps rise this week to the 90’s.

Best buy for drinks on the porch with almost any type of food is Rosé. Not the Rosé of your Mom and Pop era, the Rosé of today is made with quality grape from the bleed of its red wine brother.

As a wine maker you can take white wine and add a little color back from red skin grape juice or more likely for better quality, you can use the saignée method.

Saignée (“sohn-yay”) means to bleed, and it also describes a method of rosé winemaking. If you have a large tank of red wine that you need to get a deep dark color and just can’t seem to get there, you bleed the tank of liquid while the skins are still settling on the juice. With two parts skin to one part juice (after the bleed) you can increase the extraction of the remaining red wine.

But what do you now do with this juice you bled off? Voila !!! Sell this pink wine as Rosé.

LETTERS TO THE CLUB

Dear Rotarians,

Our Community Emergency Preparedness Committee has begun to contact the individuals at all 53 locations where the Rotary Club AED Program has placed defibrillators. These are courtesy calls to determine whether the club’s AED Partners have taken steps to order replacement pad cartridges by their expiration date.

The Covid-19 related supply delays have created some out of stock problems and late deliveries. Philips, the AED manufacturer has supplied a letter which states some reassuring news regarding the Philips OnSite1 AED’s daily self-diagnosis, the high degree of extended efficacy, and Philips’ liability protection.
