October 14, 2021

We had a wonderful celebration of the Feast of St. Edward yesterday. Beginning our day by celebrating Mass was fantastic! Fr. Dominic reminded us of the virtues of St. Edward and how to model our lives on his. Thank you to SEPO for giving each student a St. Edward decal to stick to their water bottles or devices! We ended our day with an awesome Eucharistic Procession around campus. Each class received a benediction at the end. Thank you to Fr. Dominic, our altar servers (Gio, Katie, and Gabe), our 8th grade boys who carried the canopy (PJ, Parker, Jayden, and Axel), and Mr. Pino and our choir (Gemma, Calleigh, Cristina, and Margot) for providing beautiful music. The Procession ended a second before the rain started!

In addition to our Feast Day celebrations, this week is also Homecoming. The Varsity Football team and Cheerleaders handed out treats at the end of school yesterday. Today is Spirit Day and tomorrow we'll host the Homecoming Pep Rally outside at the end of the end of the school day. The Homecoming Parade will kick off from school at 9:30 AM on Saturday followed by JV and Varsity football games at Gompers Park. The Homecoming Dance is Saturday evening. This is a family event. See below for more information.

As if this wasn't enough for one week, tomorrow is also Walk-a-Thon! I am so thrilled to announce that we have exceeded our $20,000 goal and we still have one day left. Funds over our goal will go right back into the school for the benefit of our students and staff. THANK YOU to all families, friends, and extended families who have donated. It is amazing and inspiring to see the generosity of those who support our students, our staff, and our school!

Just a reminder that students should wear Walk-a-Thon t-shirts tomorrow with PE shorts or PE sweatpants. Thank you to Mr. Wu and the SEPO parents for providing Fun Lunch on Friday too!

The days are turning cooler, so the warm weather uniform policy will end next Friday, October 22. Beginning Monday, October 25, students may not wear shorts as part of their regular uniform or PE uniform, or on dress down days.

St. Edward, pray for us!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Sara Lasica
Principal

Our Library needs your help!

Over the summer, the library underwent some summer cleaning. Much of the non-fiction book collection was thinned out because the topics were outdated. Book collections were moved around so that our younger students have more access to them, and some furniture was removed to make more space.

Thank you to Mrs. Starzyk, Mrs. Goon, and Mrs. Matejcak for volunteering to re-shelve books each week when the students return them. A school library is such a valuable aspect of the learning path for each student.

We are looking for some alternative shelving units that will make more of the books accessible to the younger students. If you know of any book stores closing or libraries renovating that would be willing to donate some library furniture, please let me know. Funds that we receive from our Scholastic Book Fair this fall will go toward new books and resources for the library too!
Musical Theater is back!

All 1st-8th graders are invited to join!

Registration and payment should be returned to the school office.
Save your pop tops!

St. Edward will continue to collect your pop tops from aluminum cans and donate them to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

This year, we will host a competition between homerooms to see which class can collect the most pop tops!

Return pop tops to school in a bag with your student's name/homeroom.

The class that collects the most pop tops between now and May will win a pizza party!

Thank you to Mrs. Belcastro for coordinating this effort!
Illness Protocols

If you are a new school volunteer, go to virtus.org and register as a new user linking your account to St. Edward School. New volunteers must submit two references to the school office that we will contact before your first volunteer opportunity.

All volunteers must complete the following:
  1. Virtus's Protecting God's Children training session or Keeping the Promise Alive recertification.
  2. Criminal background check completed through your Virtus account.

  4. Mandated Reporter Training completed through the State of IL training website. Certificate of completion must be turned into the school office.
  5. CANTS 22 form, completed and returned to the school office.
  6. Archdiocesan Standards of Behavior, acknowledged through Virtus.

The Archdiocese has recently announced, that in accordance with the recent mandate by Governor Pritzker, that effective October 31st, all “regular volunteers” in schools must be fully vaccinated or submit to regular COVID testing in order to continue to volunteer at school.

We appreciate the many volunteers that assist the school in providing support to St. Edward programs, athletics and events. Thank you for your continued support in assisting the school community with these events and for your compliance with the new policy.

What constitutes a “regular” volunteer?
Anyone who volunteers and is in close contact with students or personnel for more than 15 minutes on a regular basis.
This applies to: coaches, room parents, lunch/recess helpers, parents who want to help in the library or classrooms or with school events such as Fun Fair.

What is the compliance process?
All parents who want to volunteer must show proof of vaccination by October 31st.
Make a copy of the proof of vaccination and send it to Mrs. Lasica at [email protected]. Copies of your vaccination card will be kept confidential and on file with other volunteer required paperwork.

After October 31st unvaccinated individuals must provide a weekly COVID test in order to continue to remain on the approved volunteer list.

We appreciate your cooperation with this policy.
