Chair Chat
Dear M&I,
Thank you to all of you who attended Oveta’s memorial service on Saturday. It meant a great deal to her family to see so many colleagues come out. It was a wonderful celebration of her life. I want to especially thank Elisabeth Paymal and Kim Rize and Melissa McGeorge for all the work they did to pull together the program, the logistics and the food. For those waiting to hear about a way to donate in Oveta’s honor to a prize lecture here at U-M, I am afraid we hit a snag and could not solicit funds on Saturday. If anything changes or there is another venue for donations, I will let you know.
This week is our final virology candidate interview. Please do come hear Harry Taylor’s seminar today at 11 in West Lecture Hall and his chalk talk tomorrow at 10 AM on Wednesday in 5915 Buhl. Please do fill out evals quickly so the search committee can make a decision on next steps.
If you missed the announcement, the winter 2024 semester will start one week later and go one week longer. This is to provide a longer break at the holidays for rest and rejuvenation. I am excited about this change as I always feel like I need a vacation from my vacation over the holidays…so the extra time will help with getting ready for classes.
Speaking of vacation, the first full week of March is spring break and I will be gone, but available by text and email but likely delayed responses. In fact, I am leaving Wednesday night for a meeting through Saturday and then will take vacation the next week. If you need to speak to me in person before March 6th, please reach out asap. There will be no chair chat from me next week.
Hope you all get a little break as well.
Beth

The Regents voted for a change to the academic calendar which means an additional week off between the Fall and Winter term to support student mental health. Classes will now begin Jan 10th instead of Jan 3rd. Exams would end May 2nd and graduation will move to May 3-5th. Please be aware of these changes as you plan for staffing. Students should be allowed to follow the academic calendar.
