Local Action Update:
City of Cleveland joins PCFO
The City of Cleveland became the 19th PCFO Community this week after Cleveland City Council passed a resolution on Monday and sent it to the Mayor’s desk to be signed. We are excited to begin working with the city's leadership to build on their success and achieve their clean energy and climate goals.

During the Council Finance Committee meeting Sustainability Chief Jason Wood said, "This is an organization that is really working to help cities and communities lower their total carbon emissions. There is no cost to the city. This is a free program to participate in. Once we’re in we’ll have the ability to interact at another level with some of the partnering communities. We’ll also have access to technical experts and subject matter guidance throughout various practical level implementations of policies.”
Lawmakers propose a comprehensive clean energy solution that is ‘rooted in equity’ and works for all Ohioans
On Tuesday, September 21, State Representatives Casey Weinstein and Stephanie Howse held a press conference to introduce House Bill 429, the Energy Jobs and Justice Act.

This bill states that by 2050, all electricity generated in Ohio will come from renewable sources, as well as direct clean energy development to the Ohio communities that have been negatively effect due to the current energy policies.

The bill also focuses on making it easier to build solar and wind projects and oversee utility decisions.

Rep. Stephanie Howse (D-Cleveland) expressed during the press conference that if passed, Ohio has the opportunity become a place that people want to stay and raise families in - not leave to another state that prioritizes the future of their communities.

“What do you think it would do mentally, emotionally?" Howse said at a press conference at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland. "You’d be like, ‘You know what? They’re actually thinking about our future.’ They will actually have, plant seeds that ‘I want to be here. I want to raise my family here.’”

Bipartisan infrastructure plan would benefit Warren and all of Ohio
Mayor Doug Franklin of Warren is focused on helping his community thrive through embracing new opportunities that not only help the local economy but benefit the health and well-being of residents.

Speaking in favor of the bipartisan infrastructure bill that is expected to be voted on by the House at the end of this month, Mayor Franklin published an op-ed on Cleveland.com encouraging legislators to support investing in Ohio communities.

Mayor Franklin states, "it is encouraging when I see broad support for legislation that seeks to increase investments in clean energy and natural infrastructure alongside improvements to our roads and bridges — what I have long viewed as complementary approaches to improving people’s quality of life and creating jobs and economic opportunities. We must protect and enhance the natural environment to see our communities flourish, not at the expense of it."

Specifically, Franklin is eager to see an improvement with the region’s rivers, which is a provision in the bill focused on restoring the quality of water in our communities, as well as wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. He is excited to work with the PCFO coalition in bringing new solutions to city government and the region.

"Survey results also indicate that most Ohioans support clean energy programs and investments in promoting technology to reduce and remove carbon emissions. This was welcome news for me, as Warren was the 12th city to join Power a Clean Future Ohio, a coalition that is developing equitable clean-energy solutions across Ohio. To meet our goal of reducing the city’s carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, I know that we will need to find solutions wherever we can.” said Franklin.

Athens Mayor Steve Patterson proclaims Sept. 20 start of National Clean Energy Week in Athens
This week is National Clean Energy Week, and twenty-six states have joined in recognizing the important opportunities that clean energy presents by partaking in activities to educate and take action, including Ohio.

Taking Ohio a step further, Athens Mayor Steve Patterson declared September 20-24 National Clean Energy Week in Athens. This decision is perfectly aligned with the clean energy goals that they've prioritized and could help elevate efforts in the community to significantly reduce the city's carbon emissions in the coming years.

Athens also declares this week Pollution Prevention week, involving activities hosted by Ohio University and the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District.

PCFO commends Athens leadership for their initiative to create a clean energy future for their community.
