October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
What if our country took a new approach to domestic violence?
We know that we will not end domestic violence unless we provide a coordinated community response and a comprehensive approach that addresses both the needs of survivors and the root causes of abuse.

YWCA offers Violence Prevention programming for youth that seeks to stop violence through early intervention. Our program for perpetrators, Alternatives to Violence, is open to all, including those referred by the Courts and those who voluntarily enroll. What if programs like these were readily available to all, across the country?

The New York Times ran a great article last week about a program in Britain that is an interesting model:

"Some years ago, Britain recognized the lack of programming aimed at either preventing domestic abuse or intervening early and created a help line for perpetrators of abuse. Called Respect Phoneline, it began in 2004 with funding from the government." (Continue reading here.)
Every 9 Seconds a woman in the U.S. is abused
Please help support survivors we work with by making a donation to Every 9 Seconds: YWCA Campaign to End Domestic Violence today. Every gift will be matched by an anonymous donor.
How about a chance at some great Bulls tickets?

Equity Institute
21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge for Faith Groups
The Equity Institute has created a 21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge, something we hope will support congregations throughout the area in continuing your racial and social justice ministries. Last spring, you may have participated in the 21-Day Stand Against Racism Challenge. We modified that tool specifically for faith-based settings. Participation in this challenge will help people:
  • discover how racial injustice and social injustice impact congregations and communities
  • connect with one another around these issues
  • identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination
It has been our pleasure to collaborate with Elizabeth Batten on this project. Elizabeth is pursuing a Masters in Public Ministry at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

YWCA Crowded Closet and Shop for Good
The story behind a generous donation
We're often amazed by the generous donations we receive, and occasionally we're privileged to hear the unique story behind an extra special gift. Meet Lana and her sister Janis (pictured in frame Lana is holding).

Lana and Janis are hairstylists who, several years ago, took the domestic violence training for salon professionals offered by the YWCA. In addition to their work as stylists, the sisters have been making beaded jewelry as a successful side business for years, but recently decided to retire. Inspired by the domestic violence training, the sisters decided to donate their entire beaded jewelry collection to YWCA Shop for Good.

So stop by the YWCA Shop for Good to browse the Halloween collection of jewelry! Proceeds will help support YWCA's domestic violence program. And we'll feature more of the sisters' creations -- including holiday designs! -- in the coming weeks. Thank you so much for your generosity and creativity, Lana and Janis!

100% of profits from both YWCA Crowded Closet (820 Dempster St., Evanston) and YWCA Shop for Good (1107 Central Ave., Wilmette) help support our domestic violence and economic advancement programs. Stop by and shop with us - it's all good!

Do you have donations that could do good? We're always happy to accept donations of new and gently used women's clothing, accessories, shoes and jewelry.
