PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Diane Prystas, Principal
Kristy Jackson, Assistant Principal
Dear Roy Cloud Families,

I want to thank all of you who attended the virtual Back to School Nights, including the Q&A sessions with your teachers. Kristy and I, along with our Roy Cloud PTO president, Ryan Flynn, have our own short Welcome Back Message we'd like to share.

In other news, construction at Roy Cloud, made possible by Measure T funds, is ready to begin! The laydown area, which was fenced earlier this week, will be the basketball court near the Jefferson Lot gate. A recap to the scope of work is as follows:

  • Security fencing and gates
  • Security locks
  • Security cameras
  • Intrusion system
  • Remodeled restrooms
  • New exterior paint
  • Access compliance work in the Jefferson Lot
  • Walk-in cooler in the MUB

A word about Wednesdays
Students are required to attend school on Wednesdays. It is not a “day off.” Attendance is completed through participation in specials, as well as completing any assignments your teachers have posted. Some of your teachers have been tracking Wednesday attendance and this will continue. For those classes who have not been tracking attendance, your teachers will be sending home a Google Form to complete every Wednesday in order to be counted as being present at school.

In closing, I encourage you to check out the CharacterStrong section below which highlights our Character Trait of the month – Courage – as well as fun and meaningful ways to connect within your families.

With gratitude for your support and partnership,

Diane

SCHOOL NEWS
ROY CLOUD SEL CURRICULUM
Your Weekly CharacterStrong Update
Each month, we will be highlighting a character trait and sharing family-friendly activities to continue the meaningful engagement at home. This month's character trait is COURAGE:

Our School Site Council Needs You!
Roy Cloud's School Site Council (SSC) is looking for three parent volunteers to join the council. SSC is a group of parents, teachers, and school administrators that meet on the 4th Monday of every month to review and discuss the School Site Plan, and to discuss and make decisions regarding use of site money and Measure U funds to meet our site goals. Each volunteer term is for a 2 year commitment. If you are interested in making a difference in how funds are spent to improve facilities and student achievement at our school, please contact Diane Prystas or Mary-Elizabeth Robinson, our current SSC Chairperson. The deadline to apply Monday, September 7th.
Directory Spot, Our Online Family Directory
Our online Roy Cloud family directory, Directory Spot, has been updated for the 2020-21 school year. All new users should have received an email directly from Directory Spot with setup instructions. Returning users, your login information has not changed from last year. Directory spot also has a mobile app. If you have questions, please email [email protected]. Thank you for making this helpful parent resource possible through your PTO donations!
Welcome to the Roy Cloud Family, Ms. Huelman!
Ms. Huelman has joined Roy Cloud as our newest 6th grade teacher Here's a bit about her:

Hi! My name is Christina Huelman. I am married with a 6 year old step daughter (Lilli) and a one year old (James). I love anything to do with the outdoors. This will be my 7th year teaching 6th grade. Prior to that, I taught high school English in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Peace Corps. I am excited to continue my journey here at Roy Cloud!

Questions for the PTO?
Parents/guardians can email questions to [email protected] ahead of the meeting. Please use the subject line: PTO MEETING QUESTION.

We will do our best to answer submitted questions during the meeting or will address them in the discussion session at the end. For questions that cannot be answered in the allotted time, our PTO officers will directly respond to you with an answer. The questions and answers will also be added to the meeting minutes and posted on the PTO website.
Your Direct Donation Helps Teachers Too!
Your generous donations to the PTO enable us to help teachers as well as students. Already this year, through our teacher grants program and technology funds, the PTO has provided additional tech devices and materials for teachers, online reading and SEL programs, and additional literacy training. Here’s what 1st grade teacher, Joan Perez, says about her experience:
Using the time I had sheltering at home, I learned that a highly-recommended literacy coach/trainer pivoted to distance learning and was able to offer a lower-priced, all-day literacy training. I quickly signed up! We spent the day learning best practices for guided reading, running record analysis, reading workshops, higher-level thinking, vocabulary development, and the reading standards. This same presenter created an all-day tech conference using Seesaw and Google Meet for teaching guided reading, guided writing, phonemic awareness, and reading response remotely. With the support of the PTO grants, I was able to jump right in to both full days of learning! I look forward to sharing my learning with my team. It is wonderful to have a PTO that is supportive of teacher learning and growth. Thank You!!“
Your contribution can make a difference for the Roy Cloud community.
Our PTO Direct Donations campaign is running through October 30th
Take the "Morning Move" Interest Survey
The Roy Cloud PTO is considering a pilot program from Growfit to host a daily "Morning Move" session. This enrichment activity could take place every morning and provide your child(ren) with some invigorating exercise and a chance to get their wiggles out before their day of distance learning. Pending interest, the Morning Move would take place every school day from 7:45 - 8:05 AM. Sessions would be optional, not assigned by teachers. Please let us know if you're interested!
Enroll Now for After-School Enrichment!
There are only two weeks left to enroll in PTO after-school enrichment classes. Be sure to check out our Homeroom.com listings to sign up for fun and engaging virtual classes and other interesting enrichment opportunities. Classes will be available as 4-week sessions. Enrollment is open through September 13th. To discover other interesting and engaging learning opportunities, visit the after-school enrichment page of our PTO website. Contact Mary-Elizabeth Robinson with questions.

Don't Miss Out on Roy Cloud Spirit Wear!
Enjoy showing off your school spirit with some Roy Cloud spirit wear! Please note that each item is subject to group minimums. Please place your order by September 25th and then we will place a bulk order on October 1st. Parents, please check the sizing guide and order up if your child is between sizes.
Thank You, Room Parent Volunteers!
We are happy to report that almost all K-5 classrooms now have room parent volunteers for the 2020-2021 school year. There are a few remaining classrooms needing to fill this role (or looking for co-room parents). Key responsibilities include partnering with your teacher in communications to parents, managing the classroom fund, and planning a class project for the school auction.

If you would like to volunteer, please click here to sign up. If you don't see your child's teacher listed, then someone has already volunteered for your classroom. Please reach out to Julie Prillinger with any questions.

Thank you for supporting our school and teachers!
