February 15, 2023

The Adolescent Community’s curriculum is driven by an overarching theme that weaves throughout their yearly studies, discussions, and trips. This year’s theme is Peace and Conflict, and tonight the AC returns from their Peace Trip. The trip took the adolescents and their guides on a memorable journey through many significant locations related to Black History and the civil rights movement.

Working together, the adolescents researched and planned the experience – from travel, lodging, meals, and itinerary. Additionally, in preparation and as part of their integrated curriculum, each member of the community chose a topic and presented their research at historical landmarks and cultural sites throughout their travels. Topics included: Freedom Rides, the Black Lives Matter movement, the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, early enslaved people in America, the African American experience during the Civil War, and lynching’s impact on the current relationship between law enforcement and Black citizens.

Labyrinth Garden Work Day on Saturday, February 25

Dear SCM community,

We are planning to revamp our labyrinth and the surrounding area this spring to enhance the entrance to the school. I am seeking volunteers to kick-start the process!

We will have a work day on Saturday, February 25, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. I will provide tools, water, and light snacks. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me at [email protected] or Kelley Bruso at [email protected], so we can ensure we have the correct amount of supplies.

Any assistance will be highly appreciated, whether it's for an hour or the whole day. Children are also welcome.

Many thanks,

Samuel Hemming

Chili Lunch for Faculty and Staff

Dear SCM Parents,

The Annual Chili Lunch for our SCM Faculty and Staff is happening again this year!

Please sign up here and choose the type of chili you would like to cook. There's an option to make corn bread and to buy tortilla and corn chips. We also need toppings.

Please bring your chili in a crockpot, if you have one. If you don't have a crockpot, no worries, we will make it work.

Please drop off your chili in the morning on Thursday, March 9 after drop off, or bring it hot by 10:30 AM.

Thank you all in advance for your help!

P.S. SCM is a nut-free environment, please keep that in mind.
