2023 Growing Equity Webinar Series:

Building a More Inclusive and Just Workforce System

Join MWA for a four part virtual series starting in April 2023 to help us build a more inclusive and just workforce system.

MWA believes we have a role to play in developing a more equitable and just workforce development system in Massachusetts. In this second year of our Growing Equity webinar series, we will host 4 virtual sessions between April and July. While we hope participants will join us for all of the sessions, there is no requirement to do so. Details on each session are provided below, along with links to register.

Goals of the Growing Equity Series:

Participants learn about why workers deserve to be educated about their rights in the workplace and why worker voice matters.
Participants learn more about the mindset and process of human-centered design, understand the impact it can have on workforce service delivery via case studies, and consider redesigning services within their own organizations.
Participants understand the state budget process, how decisions on funding are made, particularly in relation to workforce development, and why the state budget can be considered a moral document.
Participants come away with actionable steps for their organizations and some vision and input into how MWA can continue to advance this work.

April:

Wednesday April 19th, 2PM-3PM: Empowering Workers through the Workforce System

In this workshop, Adrian Esquivel of the Chicagoland Workforce Funder Alliance and Alison Dickson of the University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign will share the importance of educating workers about their rights and the role that workforce development can play in supporting this education among job seeking customers.

May:

Wednesday May 17th, 2PM - 3:30PM: Using Human-Centered Design to (Re)Design Our Services, Systems, and Structures

Human-Centered Design (HCD) is a creative approach to problem solving that starts with understanding customer needs and ends with a solution tailor-made to meet those needs. In this interactive session, Ellen Johnson and Kaitlyn McGovern of Afton Partners will help participants learn more about the mindset and process of HCD, understand the impact it can have on service delivery via a case study out of Detroit, and hear how local practitioners are using it to redesign services within their own organizations.

June:

Thursday June 22, 2PM-3:15PM: The State Budget - A Policy Tool for Advancing Racial Justice

The state budget is a moral document that reflects our collective values through a set of policy choices. It represents a large, complex leverage point for advancing positive policy change. Together, with a focus on workforce development, the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center will break down the budgeting process, discuss relevant actors, highlight opportunities for community input, and note helpful tools like the MassBudget Budget Browser.

Save the date for a conversation among participants of the previous 3 sessions to discuss major takeaways, remaining questions, and suggestions for future Growing Equity sessions.
