PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
October is the time of year when students begin to distinguish themselves through academics, athletics, activities, and other endeavors. We are a community rich with remarkable humans, so one only needs to keep their eyes and ears open to witness us thriving. By way of celebrating Sequoia excellence, here’s a hodge-podge of observations and interactions from the past week -- a snapshot:

  • Emergency evacuation procedures at Sequoia include a big lift from our Health Careers Academy. Once HCA students have completed CERT training, they join in planning, implementation, and execution of evacuating and accounting for all students at our designated rendezvous point for the school (the football field). HCA students wear colored vests to indicate their role and are trained to respond to injuries. We had our first evacuation exercises this week since 2019 and I’m happy to report a smooth first drill.
  • You have to venture to the far edge of campus, behind the visitor bleachers at Terremere field before you might hear the hum of our beehives. A two-year, student-led initiative to support environmental sustainability through beekeeping has, at long last, brought two working hives to Sequoia. Students have become experts in safe handling and maintenance of the hives. I’ve been promised my first jar of honey before the end of the year.
  • The fall drama production, The Monologue Show From Hell, premieres this upcoming weekend (10/22-10/24). Drama teacher Talia Cain has assembled a large and talented cast whose enthusiasm fills the halls as they walk between classes in their bright yellow cast t-shirts. The cast gave a preview of the future of Sequoia drama with a whole school improv game at last Friday’s rally. “Mr. Priest,” one student told me, “I’m going to be a star!” Shine on!
  • We have a podcast club. It’s 20+ students strong. When I encountered their meeting, they were coming to a consensus about which podcast they should listen to. “It’s sort of like a book club,” their spokesperson told me. They were discussing some pretty serious options, preferences leaning towards something in the true crime genre. I asked if they’d share with me which podcast they settled on, but I’m not sure if they think I can hang since I haven’t heard from them.

  • Our tennis team is dominating their league this year. Pretty great outcome, especially as I remember a conversation I had with one of the players back in August, when practices had just begun. “How competitive do you think we’ll be this year?” I asked. “I don’t know,” she said, “but we’re going to have fun.” I can’t make this stuff up.

My favorite moment of Sequoia excellence this week, however, came courtesy of the entire student body at once. During Friday’s rally, students were gathered together in the stadium bleachers, cheering with sincerity in support of their peers in the band, cheer team, dance classes, the Polynesian Club. Their positivity and encouragement lived up to our school motto, Unaliyi (A Place of Friends). They saved their biggest cheers in support of the annual teacher dance (another tradition we’re all happy to revive this year!), perhaps my favorite moment of all.

Excellence presents itself in many ways at Sequoia. Keep your head up and your eyes open. You don’t want to miss a thing.

Have a great week!
Sean

COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND EVENTS
Oct. 20: Assemblymember Marc Berman’s virtual Youth Town Hall
On October 20, from 5:00-6:30 p.m., students will have an opportunity to share their perspectives and priorities for California directly with their state Assemblymember. The votes Legislators take have the greatest lasting impact on young people, and it is critically important that students’ perspectives are represented in their government.

Students will be able to voice their:
  • Ideas for new laws
  • Vision for the future of their state
  • Questions about policies that they agree or disagree with
  • Views on climate change, criminal justice reform, and other important topics

Additionally, students are encouraged to take the Youth Priorities Survey. Assemblymember Berman will look at all of the answers and take them into account when he makes decisions that affect our state and our future. Join the Youth Town Hall to hear the results of the survey.
Students can RSVP now for the Youth Town Hall for a chance to grab the virtual mic and speak their mind.

The Youth Town Hall is free and open to all college students, high school students, youth groups, youth commissions, and any young people interested in making their voice heard.
