5th Grade Social Studies
Greetings from Mr. Gault

Our students are working very diligently, both in school and online as we deal with this new educational reality caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are creating for them as normal a school environment as possible. Students who are online are required to wear their uniform and conform to school rules and regulations as if they were sitting in a school classroom. Morning assembly takes place daily and concludes with the Affirmations, Pledge of Allegiance and School prayer. Teachers have created innovative lessons and projects to keep the students active and engaged. COVID-19 has presented our school with many challenges but our teachers have found unique and creative ways to ensure a sound educational environment for our students.

The eighth graders are preparing for the Catholic High School Entrance Exam (CHSEE). This year they will be joining students in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens by taking the Test for Acceptance into Catholic High School exam (TACHS). Please remember to offer a prayer for their success in completing the examination and acceptance into a Catholic high school of their choice.

Our Golf Outing and Bocce Tournament, which occurred on Monday, 28 September, following all CDC guidelines and New York State protocols was a wonderful success. God blessed us with incredibly beautiful weather and all in attendance had a great day. On behalf of all the students of The De La Salle School I would also like to extend a special thank you to The La Salle Military Academy Alumni Association, who as always were involved in the success of this year's Golf and Bocce Tournament. Approximately 90 golfers played on Monday with several then participating in a Bocce Tournament. The 50/50 cash split raffle with tickets being sold ahead of the event was won by Ms. Abbie Hattauer of Georgia, a former Development Director of The De La Salle School. She graciously donated the $4,500.00 cash prize to the school.

Opportunities to participate in raffle drawings will also be available for future events. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we may be required to hold these events virtually. We will keep you updated on all the happenings with the school and our opportunities to participate in our fundraising events. We always count on your support and appreciate your continued prayers for the success of the young men entrusted to our care.

Respectfully in our brother, Saint John Baptist de La Salle,

 William L. Gault
Executive Director

Tax Law Changes Affecting Charitable Gifts
The CARES Act, designed to help the nation recover from the pandemic, contains four important implications for charitable giving.
  1. New Charitable Donation Deduction for Non-Itemizers - Taxpayers taking the standard deduction can now claim up to $300 in cash donations as a charitable deduction.
  2. Higher Deduction Limits - Individuals can deduct cash gifts to the extent of their entire adjusted gross income rather than the cap of 60%.
  3. Increased Deduction Limits for Corporations - The contribution limit for cash donations has been increased to 25%.
  4. Required Minimum Distribution - For 2020, there is no mandatory distribution from retirement accounts allowing retirees to recover losses.  Once they do recover, retirement funds provide a tax-wise option for charitable giving.
