News for our Educator Community | June/July 2021
One of the key themes identified by leaders of the Academy was the organization’s role in creating a community of passionate educators at UCSF over the past two decades. Debas, who founded the Academy in 2001, said: “However you looked at it, teaching was undervalued and the chances of a faculty member being promoted depended more on his/her research productivity and not on teaching excellence,” said Haile T. Debas, MD.
This summer marks the 23rd year of the Post Baccalaureate Program, a long-standing program designed to increase the diversity of the physician workforce.

“I think it’s really important that patients see physicians who look like them and understand them,” said Program Director and Academy member Alma Martinez, MD, MPH. “Unethical instances have caused communities to not trust medicine, and so much research shows that having that connection with a physician improves patients' outcomes."
