And it's not my job to convince you to accept Medicare. It's still a free country, and your practice is yours to operate as you please.
BUT...
The government requires that every eligible provider declare their intentions with regard to Medicare affiliation. That means one of three things: participate, enroll as non-participating, or formally opt out.
Staying un-enrolled, but not opted out, can be VERY risky!
How would they know?
As soon as your client presents a superbill requesting reimbursement.
Next, you will get an official letter stating that you are in violation of the law, and that you could face sanctions if you don't enroll and file claims for your client.
UH OH. Gulp. What now?
Well, for a first offense, you will most likely be required to refund all fees paid by your client during the period in which you were not complying with Medicare by either being enrolled (participating or non), or opted out.
What is opting out? It's easy. Go to the Provider Enrollment section of your Medicare contractor's site. Download, complete, and mail in the opt-out affidavit to them. Then download the private contract for use with clients.
BUT...your opt-out won't be made retroactive, so you'll still have to return fees from before you took action.
Unless you are proactive and DO IT NOW!
