October 2021 is National Pedestrian Safety Month
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), "More than 6 in 10 people walk for transportation, exercise, relaxation, or for other activities. The benefits of walking extend beyond personal and physical, to environmental benefits that can lead to healthier, quieter, cleaner, and safer streets. Unfortunately, in 2019 there were 6,205 pedestrians killed and 76,000 injured in traffic crashes. On average, a pedestrian was killed every 85 minutes and injured every 7 minutes in 2019." To help combat this NHTSA has created a series of Pedestrian Safety materials for your use. Please use these materials to increase awareness about how we can combat pedestrian crashes in our communities.
New WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines aim to save millions of lives from air pollution
According to a World Health Organization release, "New WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs) provide clear evidence of the damage air pollution inflicts on human health, at even lower concentrations than previously understood. The guidelines recommend new air quality levels to protect the health of populations, by reducing levels of key air pollutants, some of which also contribute to climate change.

Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental threats to human health, alongside climate change. Improving air quality can enhance climate change mitigation efforts, while reducing emissions will in turn improve air quality. By striving to achieve these guideline levels, countries will be both protecting health as well as mitigating global climate change.
Are Robots Coming to a Sidewalk Near You?
As published in Next City, "Referred to as sidewalk robots, 'personal delivery devices' are electrically powered devices designed to deliver cargo locally. They’re equipped with automated driving technologies that allow them to operate with or without the remote support or supervision of a human. Twenty one states have passed laws legalizing the use of at least some of these delivery robots on sidewalks. They’re generally allowed to run on sidewalks, crosswalks, and on shoulders; some type of human oversight is usually required; and they’re often required to yield the right of way to pedestrians."
