Honoring our Police and Firefighters as 9/11 Approaches

September 11 again approaches, reminding us of the willingness of our police, firefighters and first responders to put their safety on the line to protect our community. In the present pandemic, many others have willingly accepted significant risk to serve others, so this year the scope of our thanks grows quite large.

Due to the restrictions on public gathering we will not be able to conduct our annual public ceremony at Lake Louise to fully express our gratitude, but those who have done service to our community should know that we appreciate and thank you every day for what you do for us. We are a better community because of you.

The town looks forward to the end of the present emergency and a return to gathering together to better remember and thank all who help and all who have sacrificed so that we can live in safety and freedom. Until then, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

2020 Census is at a Critical Point

The deadline for submitting response is September 30.

Without a complete census count, North Carolina risks losing out on an estimated $7.4 billion in funding each year. A Census response brings an estimated $1,823 per person per year in federal and state funds back to N.C. counties and towns – that's $18,230 over the decade for every single response! North Carolina is still under counted with only a few weeks left and our rural areas are especially behind.

The Town of Weaverville gets direct funding based on the Town's population. What does your participation in the US Census do for your community? Here are a few things: health clinics, fire departments, schools, roads and highways, economic development.

It’s not too late to respond! Please submit your response by phone at 1-800-923-8282 or online at www.2020census.gov . The Buncombe County library is also assisting County residents with submitting online responses. Contact a Buncombe County library at (828) 250-4700 or library@buncombecounty.org and a library employee will be happy to help you find a way to complete your census form online.

Census takers are also now visiting households that have not already responded to the 2020 Census to make sure they are counted. Census workers are carrying official badges and wearing masks.

Remember to practice your 3Ws

The Town of Weaverville, in cooperation with the Governor and the NC Department of Health and Human Services, is asking you to remember the three Ws as we continue to fight COVID-19.

If you leave home, practice your Ws: Wear, Wait, Wash

Wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth.

Wait 6 feet apart. Avoid close contact.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer.

These actions can protect our families and neighbors as the state works to ease restrictions while the virus is still circulating. Please share this message with your family, friends, businesses, and organizations.

Welcome Officer Hunter!

Welcome to new Police Officer

The Weaverville Police Department welcomed its newest officer, Adam Hunter, on September 1, 2020, during an outdoor, socially distant swear in. He has been in law enforcement for more than a decade. Officer Hunter is highly trained in investigations and is a few hours away from completing his education to be declared a Digital Forensics Expert. He already has his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, acquired through a combination of advanced training and years of service.

Officer Hunter was born and raised in Madison County where he still resides. He has been married for ten years and has three children. He coaches a travel baseball team and they proudly finished the season in first place in North Carolina. He and his family love to be outdoors and try to spend time together fishing and camping. The members of the Weaverville Police Department are excited to work with Officer Hunter.

Changes to Weaverville's Tax Collections

Town property taxes will no longer be collected at Town Hall. The Town of Weaverville has contracted with Buncombe County for tax collection services beginning in August. This should provide for increased convenience for our taxpayers. Buncombe County tax bills will now include Town taxes. Here is some additional information:

You will receive one combined tax bill with Town and County taxes listed separately based on the following adopted tax rates:

Town tax rate = 38 cents per $100 in assessed value
County tax rate = 52.9 cents per $100 in assessed value

Tax bills will be mailed by the County during the week of August 17th

Only one combined tax payment is necessary and should be payable to Buncombe County

All methods of payment for County taxes are available for payment of Town taxes

If you pre-paid your taxes, you will be credited with the amount paid
