Message from our President,

Gail Tangeman

The Regular Meeting this week might have been a tad long but was very productive. So many of you signed up to serve on committees next year. Thank you! The presentation of next year’s budget by Debbie Hench and Cindy Reilly was very informative and allowed for some thoughtful questions from our members.

Additionally, the 2023-2024 Slate of Officers was announced for the fiscal year beginning on June 1, 2023 and ending on May 31, 2024. Congratulations to the following members:

  • President – Kelly Bocanegra
  • VP Membership – Sue Geddes
  • VP Philanthropic Programs – Toni Mueller
  • VP Resource Development – Karolyn Bragg
  • VP Marketing Communications – Vacant
  • Treasurer – Cindy Reilly
  • Secretary – Debbie Gunderson
  • Chair General Services - Patti Nonemaker
  • Chair Strategic Planning – Sue Goding
  • Chapter Liaison to Assisteens Auxiliary – Wanda Courey

The proposed budget for the 2023-2024 year and the Slate of Officers for 2023-2024 will be on the April Regular Meeting agenda for approval by members.

March Chapter Meeting Summary

The March Meeting was well attended despite the weather (53 including Laurie Milhiser and Linda Facer working the Thrift Shop). Highlights included our annual Committee Interest Fair with tons of interaction, a yummy lunch all decked out for Spring, and extremely important topics such as our incoming Board for the next fiscal year and a comprehensive, informative presentation on our financial health as we end one year and finish the budget for the next.

Receiving their name badges are two new members: Left is Marilyn Olson and on the right is Regina Tipton. They were overwhelmed with the friendliness of our group. Welcome!

The March host committee includes Wanda Courey, Cathi Thrasher, Judy Feldmeth, Sharon Henish, Mary Andrew, Diane Murphy (Chair), Toni Mueller and Chris Shovel. Not pictured is Kathy Nichols and CarolAnn Ford.

Our Nominating Committee chaired by Wanda Courey (far left) and members: Sue Zajicek Sue Smith, Patti Nonemaker, Diane Murphy, Nina Jelinek and Cindy Reilly. They did a yeoman's job. Thank you.

The Member Committee Interest Fair was very informative and well attended.

There appeared to be a lot of signups. However if you did not get a chance to attend and need information on who to contact, click on the link for all information.

VP of Philanthropies, Sue Smith

  • OSB Dressings: Toni Mueller reported that 1,981 students have received clothing at Kohl's through the OSB program this year. She also shared the story of two young children from Afghanistan who had been wearing the same clothes for two weeks. Thanks to School Bell, they are now the proud recipients of brand new clothes.
  • OSB Closet put over $4,600 of Kohl's cash to good use with the purchase of men's and women's clothing. 226 students from Central and Cucamonga school districts have received underwear and socks this year. AL Bear has distributed all but one box of bears and will soon order more. Fostering New Beginnings has had no new requests from Aspiranet for services.

VP of Resource Development, Karolyn Bragg

Thrift Shop: Chris Shovel Chair

  • For the month of February, 2023, the Thrift Shop has earned $24,783 after taxes and before expenses. Year-to-date revenue is $256,517 compared to $216,619 last year. That is a 16% increase over last year. We are hopeful to reach $350,000 by the end of our fiscal year.

Annual Fund Raiser: Ina Strickland Chair

  • Year-to-date revenue before expenses is $60,056.

Direct Mail: Laurie Milhiser Chair

  • Year-to-date revenue before expenses is $10,960.

Grants and Donations: Cindy Hall Chair

  • Year-to-date our grant total is $10,600.
  • Year-to-date donations total $13,990.
  • Year-to-date In Kind Donations is $17,210.

Treasurer, Debbie Hench

  • The Treasurer’s Report began with a presentation by Debbie Hench reviewing what it costs to operate Assistance League of the Foothill Communities and how important it is to maintain our property. The annual cost of utilities, cleaning, insurance, HVAC and roof maintenance, gardening, pest control and property repair and maintenance is budgeted at $184,500 compared to the total budgeted expenses for the year of $525,000. Several pie charts were reviewed.
  • This was followed by a presentation by Cindy Reilly, the Finance Chair, of the highlights of the 2023-24 budget for the year beginning June 1, 2023. The annual fundraising event will be an enhanced version of the Boutique we held last year and there will not be an online auction; the Thrift Shop will continue to operate at 3 hours per day, five days per week; a part-time paid bookkeeper is budgeted to assist the Treasurer; and $35,000 has been budgeted to paint the trim and exterior of our buildings (Thrift Shop, Back Marking Building, Chapter House) and the interior of Chapter House North.
  • The Finance Committee and Board reviewed the entire budget in detail and decreased expenses as much as they felt were reasonable in order to have the budgeted net surplus be at least 0. Several budgets were reduced. Upon careful review, the Committee and Board found that Operation School Bell Basics has been unable to make full use of their budget for the last few years and are recommending that this program be suspended. The proposed budget projects a net loss (more expenses than revenue) of $15,210. Approval of the proposed budget will be requested at the April meeting.

General Services chair, Patti Nonemaker

Grounds:

  • A large palm tree had to be removed due to gophers undermining the root ball. Fortunately, this was done prior to the strong winds recently that most likely would have toppled it.
  • However, our landscaping crew has been setting gopher traps. So far 8 have been caught and disposed of. Hopefully we will win this war, one gopher at a time.
  • Some of you have notices the gate/fence to the back parking lot needs repair and I wanted to assure you this is on my to-do list.

Buildings:

  • Our roofer has repaired the recent leak in the back building. Will continue to monitor for future leaks.
  • Baldy Fire and Safety did the yearly inspection of all of our fire extinguishers.
  • Quarterly HVAC maintenance had to be postponed due to rain. In the process of rescheduling.
  •  Vacuum cleaner in Chapter House North has been taken in for repairs.

Sue Zajicek, Assisteens Liaison

  • March 8 - Seven Assisteens went to read to kids in the after-school program at Grapeland Elementary School in Etiwanda.
  •  April 3 - We will be assembling our 60 Easter buckets for the children in Hope Through Housing and deliver on April 4
  • WeCare is planning our Bingo/Brunch event with Coy Estes on April 29.
  •  Our banquet committee is planning our annual banquet to be held at Upland Hills Country Club on May 15.  The theme is a “Magical Evening”.
  • Our nominating committee met on March 12 to finalize our slate of officers for 2023/2024.
  • Our membership packets have been sent out and are due back by April 30. 49 packets were sent to returning members and 11 to teens on our waiting list.
  • 12 of our Assisteens signed up to work OSB spring dressings.
  •  After our May 13 meeting, our WeCare committee stayed to make spring greeting cards for residents of Coy Estes. We are also giving them games for their meeting room.
